I'm ashamed to admit it but even after all my surfing around ARFCOM I'm with Aimless and a little fuzzy on the reason for this weapon. Can anyone fill us in? Thanks.

They seem to be getting the job done in 'Stan so what are you complaining about? :)
The vltor and magpul stocks offer a cheek weld at least as good as a fixed stock with the advantage of being adjustable for different people/situations/other equip like vests. The 18" barrel gives plenty of velocity for the 75gr and 77gr ammo being used. You also need to remember that the military models are often used with the silencer attached. |

From what I have managed to gather, a spr is a preban that has all of the nice options. With an 18" barrel.
I went thought the links and one of comments I noticed, was that there is no need for a free floated handguard. At "500 meters" I would think I want all the barrel float I can get. I find the idea of a designated shooter to be contray to basic squad level infantry doctran. 4 or 5 m16's at 4 or 500 meters should make anyone flinch. |

Because you can have a military rugged/reliable/durable, 18" (or close enough to it) barreled sniper rifle that weighs 12 pounds or less, that can shoot like this at 300 yards!

I know man, I totally missed. But please, please let me explain! There's always an excuse isnt there! This was the first time I shot the gun and really didnt know where I needed to hold at 300, or where to dial the turrets. So I just held dead on and gave it a go. As you can see, with the 77gr BH ammo, it was fairly low. But man, I sure thought the group was impressive. I just wish I could have taken that flier back! |

So, what am I limiting myself to if I build a M4

If you build an M4 its a CQB rifle that still has accuracy to make shots at a few hundred yards. The SPR is used like a designated marksman rifle only used in numerically smaller SF units. The barrel is shorter becasue(I think) the comp adds length and so does the can and the trade off for velocity and size was at 18". It has to be free floated to be an SPR. In fact MSTN has all the parts that make it an SPR and if its missing something its just an accurized AR15.
Some of the biggies (to me) to call it an SPR would be... SS match barrel of med contour Ops Inc muzzle break FF railed forearm folding front and rear sight high powered scope KAC 2 stage trigger All SPRs ever made had these features. |
