Link Posted: 1/21/2006 8:43:44 PM EDT
It is a cut for the forward mount of an M203 grenade launcher.

A 203 grenade launcher. You never know when you might need it. I guess the same goes for a bayonet lug - To me it's a cool factor thing - Like having a car with 400 hp under the hood - Doubt that I'd ever opener up, but I can say I got them

Attaching an M203 grenade launcher.
Link Posted: 1/21/2006 9:26:40 PM EDT
Believe it or not that notch is actually for mounting an M203 grenade launcher.
Link Posted: 1/21/2006 9:33:27 PM EDT

It's there so you can mount a Glock.
Link Posted: 1/21/2006 10:00:43 PM EDT
They are trying to make it a bit lighter?

Link Posted: 1/21/2006 10:12:51 PM EDT
Gentlemen, gentlemen, please. Can we give the man a straight answer? Can we just stop beating around the bush here and come to terms with the fact that the purpose of that step-down is the forward mounting of an M203 grenade launcher?
Link Posted: 1/21/2006 10:18:58 PM EDT
I am going to take a guess here, but I think the tapered section of the barrel is for a M203 grenade launcher.... please correct me if I am mistaken.

Most believe that this was initially for an M203 grenade launcher. Alot of testing was done within the military. They thought that the barrel should be "stepped down" in this manner for some reason then realized it would be great for somthing else. They thought about it for awhile and for some reason they were inspired by the design and in fact decided to use it to fit the M203 grenade launcher.

+1 to our post counts

I've always wondered why it is there, but I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone.

It's there so when you slide your hand down the barrel real fast, It will peel your skin off. Bill T.
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 3:55:40 AM EDT

word has it that is for hanging an M-203 Grenade Launcher
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 3:57:30 AM EDT
If you want the real answer, you'll have to ask Mr. Owl. You know the one who tells you how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. The world may never know.

It is where you break the barrel over your knee when you want to go SBR.

Everyone else was lying.
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 4:51:52 AM EDT
No its not! its made so you can bend it for shooting around corners!

Why would anyone want to mount a Clock on an AR?

Oh - sorry "Glock" - that makes more sense.

So you can tell the time without ever taking either hand off the gun.

Damn I feel stupid, I thought the M-4 mounted to the grenade launcher
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 7:12:09 AM EDT
It's there so when somebody takes your AR away from you and shoves it up your ass, your sphincter will catch in the groove and stop any forward progress.
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 7:12:10 AM EDT
So let me get this straight, it is for adding a Glock, bending it to shoot around corners, Breaking it over you knee when I go with a SBR.............Oh ya, I almost forgot, and it is also used to mount a M203 grenade launcher. WOW, I never new that, you guys know everything.....

It's a useless waste of machine tooling and time to mount something that you won't ever own or use.
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 7:38:23 AM EDT
I'm gonna take a wild stab at this and say it is for mounting an M203, I'm not 100% sure though.

Yeah huh, when I go squirrel hunting I always take my m203 so that I can knock down the tree that the little rat with a fuzzy tail lives in
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 8:22:29 AM EDT

Link Posted: 1/22/2006 9:11:46 AM EDT
So, what's the real deal? Is it actually used for a grenade launcher? I like the clock idea better, myself.

Link Posted: 1/22/2006 9:11:59 AM EDT
It's just a comparison point for what an appropriate barrel contour looks like, something to remind you how much extra metal you're lugging around!

Just go Superlight, baby! LOL....

Link Posted: 1/22/2006 9:14:44 AM EDT
It's for mounting shotguns, glocks, and extra rails...
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 9:46:47 AM EDT
It balances the harmonics of the barrel, saves weight and allows you to attach a MRE for when you get hungry. Duh.
Link Posted: 1/22/2006 11:02:35 AM EDT
NO, NO, NO, It's for hanging a giant pink dildo to lure in MR> MICHAEL MOORE.

HAHA! I actually laughed out loud for this one. Ahh, I love this board...

It's where 4.6745% off the barrel is removed for the federal barrel tax.
