What is the model number of the M16A2?

The answer has evaded me for three years,I know that it is either 645 or 705 but I can't narrow it down from those two.

The Model 705 is the Export/LE # for the M16A2.

The Model 645 was the XM16A1E1(M16A2) test rifle # that lead to the M16A2 in 1983.

It's the model 705. Colt has one designation for US military weapons and a model # for the LE/Export rifles.

M16A1=603/613
XM177E2/GAU-5=629/639/649
M16A1 Carbine=653
M16A2=RO705
M16A3=RO701
XM4, M4, M4A1=R09**
etc..........................................

Well from what I see with Carbines at least:
XM177=610
XM177E1=609
XM177E2=629
GAU-5A=630
M16A1Carbine=653
M4=920
M4A1=921HB
Commando/Safe/semi/auto=R0933

Per Colt Manual 202 ca. 1992, page 2

The "M16A2 rifle with fully adjustable rear sight (A2)" and "3 round burst and semi auto" is the RO705.

I know I saw somewere that The 705 was full auto and it also said that it was the current standard U.S. military rifle, the full auto thing threw me because I knew it was 3 round burst.

Hmmmmm, Looks like will never know for sure.

Hey Blikbok, Thats the site were I heard that the 705 was full auto!

On that site, The 705 up above says it's the official U.S. military service rifle with 3 shot burst, then way down below it says that the 705 is a full auto export model, and in the middle it says the model 645 is the official U.S. military service rifle with 3 shot burst. Whats up with that?!?

It also says that the model 705 has a HBAR barrel, when we all know that the U.S. military has an A2 profile barrel, thin under the handguards.

This info goes back to the early years of the M16A2 family of weapons.

I have in front of me a 1984 Colt brochure I picked-up at the 1985 AUSA show entitled "The Colt M16A2 - The New World Standard". On the back page are listed the six models of M16A2 variants available at that time. They are the 701, 703, 711, 723, 733, and 741.

Additionally, they show the M203 40mm grenade launcher as an add-on.
