The "M" in military designations stands for "Model".
What the "AR" in AR15 stands for has been the subject of more than one discussion on this site. Originally, I believe, it was supposed to stand for Armalite; the company that developed the piece. When Colt bought the rights to build the gun, AR sort of started to mean "Automatic Rifle"; so take your pick[:D] |

ArmaLite used the "AR" designator on all their weapons - the AR-7 was a .22 cal survival rifle, The AR-17 was for a semi-auto 12 gauge shotgun, the AR-13 was a hyper-velocity multi-barrel gun system for aircraft, etc. There are those, mainly Colt, who wish to revise history but the above is factual. |

When Eugene Stoner hooked up with Reed Knight, he was both older and wiser. The Knight's guns all have an "SR" designator. The "SR" in SR-25 and SR-15 stand for Stoner Rifle-25, Stoner Rifle-15, etc.

WHAT DOES THE "AR" IN AR-15, AR-180, OR AR-10 STAND FOR? There is a common misconception that AR stands for "ArmaLite Rifle." This is untrue. The AR-17, for instance, is a 12-gauge shotgun. Early designations like ArmaLite 10 were shortened to simply AR-10. The AR refers to ArmaLite. The ArmaLite Division of Fairchild developed the AR-15 in 1959. Fairchild licensed the rifle to the Colt's Patent Firearm Manufacturing Corporation, and Colt's assumed the AR-15 trademark. Early Colt rifles were marked "Colt ArmaLite 15." Even today, the designation to that Colt brand rifle refers, somewhat embarrassingly, to ArmaLite. |

In the case of Beretta AR-70 the AR actually stands for Automatic Rifle (I think) |

In 1978 I owned an AR-7 (I think). It was a collapsible .22 rifle that you could break it down and stash all the parts in the butt stock, and it would even float once broken down! I wish I still owned it. Dang, I don't even remember who made the one I had. :-(

The AR-7 is still being manufactured.
Armalite sold the rights to the AR-7 in the mid 70s (I notice they have a tendency to do that [:D]). The AR-7 is currently manufactured by Henry, and I believe a company called Survival Arms. The Henry is available by special order from any Wal~Mart that still sells firearms (sorry Kali!) for about $150. |

That's because ArmaLite (the old ArmaLite) NEVER had much money !! It is truly amazing that ArmaLite accomplished as much as they did with the scant resources available. Much of what was developed early on was done in 1200 square feet. |

Whether its ARmalite, AssaultRifle, ARifle, ad infinium, its whatever the author wishes it to be. Since liberals re-write history to meet their own agenda, maybe AR means AwfulRepublicans? |

As of the 1994 liberal based assault weapons ban, the AR stands for Assault Rifle. That way they can work on just banning them outright.
