Just having a little fun with ya. Glad you weren't offended. I see that you are from Texas. I bought the M16 from a dealer in Dallas.
Link Posted: 12/28/2003 12:30:22 PM EDT
Well, I only PAID $674.50 for it.  What it's worth is an entirely different matter.  If it serves its purpose, it's worth my life.  If it doesn't, it isn't worth shit on the bottom of a sandal.

Can drive a person nuts thinking about it some times....

My varmint rifle:

DPMS Stainless Steel lower=350
Lower parts kit           = 75
JP Ent. trigger/hammer    =150
3 way adj. buttplate      =120
JP Ent. grade 1 assemb    =775
Leupold 6.5-20x Long Range=750
Armalite 30mm mount       = 85
Harris sitting bipod      = 90
plus  other crap around   =200

Total is around 2600 dollars.

Then there's my AR10, as it sits it was cheap at 1400 dollars plus 350 for scope and mount.   But eventually it will get a ARMS SIR for it when they are released plus I'll probably get an accurized long range upper in 300SRUM or 260Rem with appropriate long range scope, figure close to 4500 when all is said and done.

point is, some of us spend a lot of money on our toys...

I was just adding it all up and was surprised.
my wife just shook her head at the lunacy of it all
Link Posted: 12/28/2003 1:18:27 PM EDT
Well, what a rude thing to ask.... now you got me thinking about it...
$295 BM complete lower
$595 BM complete flattop 16" upper
$140 GG&G MAD flipup rear sight
$150 GG&G flipup front sight
$300 Knight's RIS (or is it RAS?)
========
$1480 so far, but I still have to add...
$200 Burris scout scope
$100 ARMS rings
$30 ARMs ring inserts
=======
$1810 greeeeeaaaaat

Thank god I got the RIS used, the upper, lower, scope and sights when I was working at a gunshop & got things at cost.
Now you've got me thinking what my new project total will be....

$100 pre A-1 stripped upper
$60 misc. upper parts
$100 bolt & carrier
$200 BM barrel
$260 Cavarms complete lower
$100 Carbon fiber free float tube
$150 KKF 'smithing fees (approximate)
=======
$970 when all said and done.... again, damn you for asking!

And SGB, does your $800 Armalite do anything that a $410 Model 1 sales kit on a $100 stripped BM lower doesn't do?

Between ACOGs, surefires, and handguards and mounts to put all this crap, I'm afraid to add up the numbers. But what I spend on a single AR, and what it's worth to me is incomprable.

Steve.

Hmmm....alot of those prices are retail.  Not too many dealers on this site sell at retail.  Where did you guys buy your stuff?

Actually, I specifically said I DIDN'T pay those prices.  The question was "what is yours worth?" which I took to mean for insurance purposes.  If it got stolen, what would you expect to be paid by the insurance company, retail, or whatever the best deal they could find on the closest facsimile?

You say that like the other one will, as if it's a matter of fact.  And let's assume that it would, is that really a $300 upgrade? [;d]
Link Posted: 12/28/2003 8:45:24 PM EDT
I wouldnt say its a $300 upgrade but chrome lining the bore and chamber is an exact science and has to be done right.I also know its one of the most expensive things cost wise in AR production. As far as the inside of a barrel rusting yes it can if its not chrome lined and not regularly maintained.A non chromed barrel should be fine if maintained properly.I prefer chromed and Ill only buy Bushmaster barrels.I would colt if they were cheaper and FN dosent sell to the public.I know bushy and colt make their barrels in house and use 4150 steel,FN Im not sure but if they do make their own Im sure theres are the best materials also seeing as how they manufacture for the government.
Link Posted: 12/28/2003 10:53:44 PM EDT
my cheapest cost less than $400 to build runs like a champ. My most expencive aint any of your business. [:D]

CB1 if you try to collect that insurance some time, you'll probably find out something.

You can get barrels all day long from Bushmaster for $175.  That doesn't include the "credit" you should get for the non-chrome-lined.  Model 1 lists their barrels at $135.  Looks to me more like a $40 upgrade.

Don't get me wrong, I like chrome-lined barrels too.  Your initial "why spend so much" attitude is what caused me to take the piss out of you.  At the end of the day, you could buy a used model 1 kit gun off of somebody you knew and trusted for probably under $500, and it would still throw lead downrange just as fast and practically accurately (meaning as well as most could do with irons or would need) as the $800 Armalite.

Edit....
Just looked at the Armalite website, and it looks like chrome lined is only an option on their 20" barrels, and in fact it's only a [b]$20]/b] upgrade.  What happened to your other $280? [;d]

I think he may be referring to the practice, by certain insurance carriers, of refusing to cover firearm losses unless the insured buys separate policy riders for them.

Now it makes sense, in fact I already have seperate riders for the firearms.

I recomend the seperate rider 100%

My point gentlemen is that Cost and Worth are two seperate things. All the do dads, bells and whistles cost a lot and the subjective is what are all those bell's whistles and do dads WORTH.

To me thier worth is minimal despite the cost. My Armalite is worth the $800 cost to ME. I spend the extra do dad money on ammo and practice.

[peep]Sorry if I put a wet blanket on the look how much money I spent party.

........and I have lots of piss left [;)]

the point is that it's relative.  That's what you seem to be missing.  You spent the extra money on ammo?  good.  The guy that has the $500 model 1 gun spent that extra $300 on ammo.  And the guy that has that SAR 1 he got a couple of years ago spent the extra $500 on ammo.  Just like your $800 Armalite does everything my $1800 Bushy does, so the $500 Model 1 does everything your Armalite does.
Also, bear in mind, some people have the money for the rifle AND the ammo.  Just because YOU had to make a choice between the two doesn't mean everyone has to.
I don't think the point of this thread at all was "look how much I spent".  I honestly never thought about it until this thread.  I couldn't care less if you think I spent too much OR too little.
