Hi friends,

Does anyone know of the warranty on NDS uppers?
I just picked one up on the secondary market, and noticed two
things wrong with it.

1:  the rear hole for the eport rod isn't quite right
and as a result ~
2:  the eport door does not stay closed.

Just picking up the rifle makes it jump open.
I know it's kinda a small things, but oddly irritating.

Anyone else experience this and what's the fix?
It's a 603 type upper.
thx

Is the port door you are using a repro a1 door or original? I heard that those reproduction a1 doors were having that same problem and wouldn't stay closed. I would try another door, maybe a modern style first before calling NDS. If it is an upper issue, I'm sure they will treat your right.

I did use a modern style, was making a R6401 clone, and it won't stay shut once rustled.
I've never gotten bad treatment from NDS, will see what they say?
thx

You bought it used?  Probably safe to assume there's no warranty!

Can you try a different port door? Check rod? Possibly tweak a bit to remain closed. Could easily be latch on port door also.

I know other companies such as AIM have sold similar blems,  as is,  in past where port door machining was misaligned and buyers purchased as such and purchase price reflected this.

Not sure about NDS and the different blem reasons that they sell.

If it will stay closed until bumped or moved pretty sure it can be remedied very easily.

The upper isn't a blem, no B on the lugs.
Got an email from Harlan asking about it sent a pic.
(thanks for answering on a sunday!)

I really don't think its the door, pulled it from a working upper.

When I put the rod in the NDS, right away I could tell something wasn't right,
also there was a drag mark on the reciever threads from someone else trying to put in a
eport door rod..... they too must have found out there was indeed an issue.

Still hoping for a happy ending.

The only other time I had a problem like this was on a Colt 6920 upper, the door would
snap shut, the dealer took it back with out a question and refunded.

I would not think it would be under warranty after buying it used!

I suspect the port door.  I have had aftermarket port doors that did that on GI uppers, but when I put a Colt on they worked perfectly.  Even an original port door can get loose.  I have an A1 now that is loose on anything.

**Update
Spoke to Mike and Harlan and they are going
help out and replace the upper.
I'm amazed and very grateful that they are
Standing behind their product.
Thx NDS!

Update:

We received the upper today.

I checked it with 4 different original Colt M16A1 port doors and all of them snapped in and stayed shut no problem.

I even smacked the upper with the palm of my hand to try and dislodge them.

This 603 upper was an early blem for the scope mount slot in the carry handle. The first 30 of those were cut too narrow.

Either way we will replace it per my earlier conversation with tiger222

I fully appreciate what NDS is doing.

Just to add flavor to the soup, I installed the very same door I used on the NDS 603 on a NDS 604
and it snapped shut not a problem.  The door that the 604 came with was from Rifle Stuff?
(some kind of retro - repro)
and it doesn't work at all on the 604, but almost works on the Bushmaster the original test
door came off of.  But tap it slightly and it pops open instantly (Again the repro door was not the one
tested on the 603.)

Looking at the machining on my Colt uppers as compared to NDS they are indeed different
in shape and size for the ejection port door geometry where the button goes up into the reciever.
Never thought to look until now.

Lessons learned.
1:  Only buy new uppers from NDS, be patient and wait.  NDS doesn't mark their blem uppers
and the original 603 upper as per NDS is also one with a carry handle that is too narrow.  I've asked
them to mark them if they could.  I've bought two off the EE and both are blems. with both sellers
unaware of the issues.
2:  Only buy Colt e-port doors, if possible.  Or at least test them out prior to installing the barrel, but with
a BCG installed.

In the 30 years I've been around AR's and having worked over hauling PD M16's, I've never seen
anything like this.  Again very pleased with NDS's response, they really went of their way to make it right.
