OK so what is the deal. Do I get a real Leupold variable mag deer hunter scope for under $200? Or is some chinese knock off?

They carry Leupold's Rifleman models.  Yes they are Leupolds but they are their bottom of the line model.

For $20 more, you can get a VX-I. It is a better scope for sure. And if you are looking at a
3-9x40, you should look at the Nikon Buckmaster. They are about $199.99 everywhere you go.
