HI ARF

thinking of making a M605 CAR15 carbine replica (the one with the tri-prong just forward of the standard rifle lenght FSB)

does anyone know what diameter the gas port needs to be to function?

TIA

I too would like to know this for a 605 Clone project.  Someone posted a project a while back and they were having cycling problems.

My guess would be the same as the Colt 10" models or slightly larger.

For mine I just plan on using either a CMMG or Bushmaster Dissipator barrel. They use a carbine gas system, which should work perfectly with the barrel length. I know people have gotten the rifle length gas system to work, but I want mine to work reliably, so why take the chance? Seems an easier route as well.

Does anyone know if the Triangle Hanguards will fit over the gas block without modifications ?

I cut one down a while back and indeed it would not cycle no matter what. I used my standard M16 lower with the standard buffer and it proved too heavy to function. I also used my shorty M16 lower with an M4 H buffer and it also proved too heavy to function reliably. I got one six round burst and that was the best it would do before short stroking. The only thing I didn't try was the Edgewater buffer and I don't really want to run it with that.

Hopefully one day soon I'll be able to get back on that project and make it work. I think it will work with the gas port reamed to a larger size. The standard gas port is something like .0625. With a 15 inch barrel and the gas port and nearly 14 inches I think it would be safe to go as much as .110 without battering the system.

My thoughts are more toward going with the Dissipator though, strictly from the reliability standpoint. And yes, the handguard heat shields will have to be trimmed to clear the gas block. The barrel will also have to be turned down near the muzzle and the lug shaved off to look just like the real thing.

J&T/Doublestar recently did a run of lightweight profile dissapator barrels.  They probably still have some.

I want to build a 605 upper in the worst way
Specs on the J&T barrel are supposed to be Chrome Moly 1x9 Lt contour all the way
If the Mid Barrel gas Block is small enough the Triangle Hg's might fit with no mods
The one thing I wish was that the Barrel was avail with Chrome lining
