Is there a norm?

Traditional: steel.
What FN says: chrome.
www.fnhusa.com/contents/r_spr_7.htm

The pertinent text:

SPR match-grade barrels are hammer forged from a superior alloy and the bores are chrome-plated for superior accuracy and long life. These barrels meet or exceed Mil-Spec in all criteria.

Norm is stainless or chrome-moly...

The various 'sniperized' M16 variants use SS barrels...

Most CMP guns are SS or CM...

FN is being an odd-duck by chroming their SPR (not to be confised with the SPR M16 variant)...

Basically, chrome lining is for machineguns, assault rifles, etc...

Precision weapons are not chromed...
