I would spend another $50 and get the Weaver 3-15x50mm. We just had this talk a few days ago in another tech forum;

From the Precision Rifle forum:

John,

If you could only buy one.  The Weaver or PST?

Weaver without a thought.

Not that the PST is bad.  For most, it'll be just fine.  But I've broken a lot of scopes over the years and it changed the way I thought of them.  I used to look for features first, now I look for toughness.  IMHO the Weaver wins that battle hands down.  The PST was designed for sporting shooters.  The Weaver was designed for a combat environment.  I also own a Vortex Razor and the Weaver is much more like that than the PST is.

Other things I like about the Weaver.  Great glass.  Lots of elevation.  Great, forgiving eyebox. Very simple, useable, rugged scope.   I loved mine and if I had the funds, I definitely would have held on to it to put on *something*.

Hey thats me.

I was really looking forward to buying a PST when they were announced.  The more I read about them the more compromises I find in them.  They are still a good scope but there are so many choices now in scopes with similar features for under $1000.00

OP, take a look at the Weaver mentioned above and also the SWFA SS 3-9x42 with the mil-quad reticle.

The Weaver is longer, with a larger objective, and nearly 10oz heavier. Unless it's a varmint rig, I'd rather have the PST for the smaller size. Never played with either, just going off specs.

The Weaver is also FFP, 3-15x, has a much better build quality, and most reviewers say it has better glass than the PST...

lotta love for the weaver

Does anyone actually own the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44?  The reviews I have read were rather good.

While I am a huge Vortex fanboy and really think they are a great company, I have to say in the 2.5-10ish bracket there is some stiff competition out there.  While it doesn't matter with 1-4x scopes, I personally think a First Focal Plane reticle is better suited when you start increasing magnification beyond that.  Big question is how important is illumination?  If not, literally tons of options at that price and the SWFA SS 3-9x FFP would be a strong competitor.  For a little more $$, the already mentioned Weaver seems to be getting great reviews.

I have the 2.5-10x44 and I love it, great value for the money.  I didn't want anything any bigger though.
