Very nice find.

I never was a door gunner except the last couple of weeks in country.

I was at Nha Trang.  Beautiful costal city with a really nice beach.  I had been relieved of my day to day duties and was waiting around to leave.  I was asked if I wanted to do something interesting before leaving.  They were looking for door gunners to fly up and down the beach every morning to gun sharks from the air.  You could see the sharks very clearly in the water.

I went out several times and it was actually a lot of fun.  I don't know how many sharks I dispatched but it was a blast shooting at them.  Beat the hell out of shooting the M-60 for other reasons.  I might have reupped if that could have been my regular job.

Great video. But, yeah, now I sure want to join up with the heli-copters and go to the beach with chicks and meet movie stars and have fun shooting machine guns.

Don't mean to sound flippant. Those helo guys were/are some brave men.

Thanks OP.  This was really interesting to me.  My Uncle was a Crew Chief on a Huey in Vietnam.  I never really looked into it at all - figuring that a Crew Chief was more of a guy who barked orders or something.  I never thought for a second that these guys were also the door gunners.

I remember when I was a kid, My Uncle came home for Christmas one year in an upper body cast.  My Mom told us the story that the belt/strap that held him into the helicopter had been shot at some point.  As they were taking off he was leaning out to drop a box of something to the guys still on the ground when the strap gave way.  He fell about 10-15 feet or so onto the ground.   He broke several bones in his back, shoulder, and arm.  I remember that he looked like a zombie with one arm out straight.

I'll have to show this to my father in law .
He was a door gunner for a while. That wasn't
His job when he landed in country ,,,, but they handed him
A vest and a quick lesson on the m60, and bingo... Door gunner.
So I think he might find the " intensive training" part interesting.
