You push two pins on an AR-15 to separate the halves. The top half is the upper, and the bottom half is the lower.

The term "AR15" desribes a rifle (think "automobile").

The term "M4" describes a type of AR15 (think "SUV" or "pickup truck" or "van").

An AR15 can have a 10.5, 11.5, 14.5, 16, 18, 20, or 24 inch barrel.

An M4 (in military terms) has a 14.5" barrel, collapsible stock, flattop, and a grenade launcher cut in the barrel in front of the front site base. Civilian "M4's" usually have 14.5" barrels with permanent flash hiders (to get them up to the minimum legal barrel length of 16") or 16" barrels.

If you have any more questions, just ask.
