Just installed my first two stage trigger, and it seems the first stage is just taking up the slack before reaching the second stage. Is that about right?  If it is what's the advantage over a nice single stage trigger.

Asking in case I didn't install it properly.

Sounds about right.  First stage should be taking up the slack, second should be the break.

That's how they work, first stage takes you to the wall, second stage breaks the sear. What trigger did you install?

It let's you safely manipulate a semi auto trigger at a lower overall weight.

Put a crisp breaking 2lb single stage in an AR and you will have doubles.

My Geissele hi-speed has no issues at 2lb, furthermore I can take the slack out and the second stage only needs six more ounces and I get a clean break.

Great trigger, I love them. If you haven't used a 2 stage before they're different, but once you get used to them they're great for range/target use.

The advantage is that you can 'hold' right at the breaking point while your breathing cycles, knowing that when you're ready, the trigger will break right when you want it.
Shooting a single stage trigger, especially with a heavy pull, makes it more difficult to know exactly when the break will occur.
ETA:  this typically only matters if you're trying to make a 'precision' shot....if you're blasting away in CQB, you're not going to feel any of this, and will pull right past it...single or 2-stage.  At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference and training...there are plenty of folks who do equally well with both style triggers.

I run 2 stages in all my guns now, CMC 1lb /3lb to be exact. I much prefer having a slight bit of take up before the break than having no trigger movement at all on the pretravel side.  This allows me to feel some tension on the trigger movement and gives me a bit of movement area incase I need to come off the trigger last second.

I love my two stage. It's the best of both worlds, IMO. I don't see the downside to one because you can just use it like a single stage if you want.

I jumped on the single stage bandwagon for my competition rifles for a while but ended up going back to a nice two-stage.

For the close stuff they are pretty much the same speed but for anything precision (longer distance or just smaller targets up close) the two-stage is much easier to shoot well.
