question for you mad threaders out there!

Im threading a barrel on the lathe in a couple of days and I know the barrel is 1/2 inch 28TPI but when I turn it down before I thread what should the dia. actually be...1/2"? or a little above to allow threading to come out to 1/2"

thanks

You will want to start at .500. Are you single pointing or using a die? I usually leave it at .500 if I am single pointing and then after done I run some 400 grit sand paper over it to remove burrs and polish it up a little so it ends up at .498 to .499

Thanks Chuck,

Do you mean .500 after turning it down? or after its threaded? I will be using single point. and is it different when using a Die?

You will turn it to .500 before you start threading. Single point of die you will take it to the same diameter. If you end up under .500 when done threading something went wrong and more then likely cut too deep. Sometimes I rough it in with single point then finish with a die as our lathe here isn't the greatest. Not th ebest way but sometimes you do what ya have to.
If using a die I put a fairly large chamfer on it to help start the die easier.
