Ok, this is really ticking me off. I just took it apart and put it back on, and it still flexes at the front a good 1/8" with only thumb pressure. I can move it up, down, and side to side. Even w/out the lower rail installed, the upper rail moves like this, so it has nothing to do w/ the seperate lower piece. I cranked the 4 screws down properly. I was planning on putting a rail mounted flip up front sight, but this rail is not going to cut it.  Heck, my buddies comparable $90 Yankee hill rail is rock solid.  Any ideas? |

hum... you should be fine w/ a FSP even it it flexes a little... i don't know...
is it left to right motion, up and down... or all directions? |

mostly up and down, also a bit side to side.
Once again, my buddy's $90 Yankee Hill does not budge! |

hhmm.. never thought a barrel could "flex". I put my reciever in the vise wrench, and there is movement when I push on the barrel only!!! Is this normal? |

Ok, after some experimenting it definately IS the barrel. The Troy is solid. I put the Troy on the corner of my desk and pushed on it from the top, NO movement. So, I had been actually moving the barrel in relation to the Troy, not the other way around.... |

I just leaned on the wrench, like all my other builds  It is probably more like 1/16th of an inch, but is very noticable. |

Yet more research... My M4 barrel has a FF RAS II. I can't "flex" the barrel or rail. Nothing budges.... Sup w/ dat???

That is exactly why free floaing the barrel improves accuracy. There is no stress placed on the barrel from the handguard. |

Roger that, it is still bugging me that I can move my 20", but my 14.5" barrel does not flex relative to the RASII.............. |

My 20" setup does NOT move.
I really dont think its normal...given the design of the barrel and receiver, how the hell can the barrel move? There simply isnt anywhere near enough "slop" for that to happen...atleast that is what I thought. |

Yes, depends on how much you force it. I have an SR25 that i can force the barrel an easy 1/8-inch and the gun still shoots 3/4-inch MOA all day long. So yes, the barrel can flex that much. wacjob |

So barrel flexion is ok and "normal", but not all barrels will flex. Is that the consensus? |

Just tried my Bushmaster with a 16" M4 barrel mounted with an ARMS #50c SIR and it has a little movement too. First time that I've ever tried to move it. It makes sense though. As others are saying, the longer the barrel, the more leverage being applied to the barrel nut which is allowing the small amount of flexing that we are experiencing.

Well, I'm no expert, but most barrels flex, to a point, unless it three inches wide barrel, that's 16-inches long. I have a couple of bull-barrel bolt-guns and the all flex. Metal isn't that rigid... wac |

I just finished putting a DD12.0 on my M4 barrel, I swear it didn't flex. It didn't flex when I yanked on the YHM flip up either

A barrel is just a steel tube with rifling, nothing more. ANY steel tube will flex if you put force on it, regardless of length or diameter. The shorter and thicker the tube and the smaller the force, the less the tube will flex, but there WILL be flexing in any event. It is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

I can put my 4 fingers on the barrel in front of the FSB and my thumb on the bottom of my RAS II and squeeze, barely getting movement. Probably between 1/16 to 1/8" max.
