Tony Rumore of Tromix completed my 458 SOCOM suppressed barrel. It’s an integral barrel that comes in at just under 20 inches total.

I got this from Tony Today 12/12/05

I finished the new baffle stack today, with all the gooves cut in them.
I also made a new stainless gas block and left the ID undersize so I
could press it into position on the barrel.  Then I took the barrel and
turned it between centers to cut the gas block down so the suppressor
tube would press onto it.  This ensures that tube is running dead nuts
straight with the bore.  When I made the baffles, I left them slightly
oversize on the OD, then slid them all on a tight tolerance precision
ground shaft.  Then I turned the entire shaft with all the baffles on
center as a solid unit while making the last OD cuts to the baffles.
This way, every baffle lines up with it's bore dead nuts center in the
tube regardless of any runout when each one was manufactured
independantly.

I will make a new end cap tomorrow, and it will be ready to test.

I have been talking with Tony the last few days about an integral suppressed .458 SOCOM upper and the options we have in creating such a wicked beast.  Tony has tested a few barrel lengths, gas tube options and feels that this thing will be pretty frick’n sweet.

Today I green lighted the effort and as we speak Tony is designing and will soon develop a custom integral suppressed SBR .458 SOCOM.  I am sure he will update his web site with photos at some point and I will post them on my site as well when it’s in my possession or I get photos during some stages of development.

I just got this email from Tony today.

The barrel is 10" long.  The barrel/suppressor OAL is 19.5"

I started on your upper today.  Here's a pic of the barrel with the
custom one-off gas block.  I machined the block from a 1.75" diameter
piece of solid stainless steel bar stock.  It is threaded 24tpi on the
front which screws into the back of the suppressor tube.
YOu can post this on AR15.com if you like.

New baffel design.  Tony called me tonight and is going to get this new version to the range.  So far the testing has gone very well and he has tested a range of bullets and so far from what I have heard I cant wait to get my hands on the sucker.

It's .975" tall and 1.625" in diameter.

Marty
Does the suppressed 458 in your picture work with the collapsible stock because it is suppressed or was it just for pics?

I called the company (D&D) that made that single 458  silencer and they stated they are not going to move forward with production right now because they are behind on gun smith business.  That and they could not get the db reduction as low as they had wanted to make it a standard production item.

Thats the photo listed under the Class III NFA link on the Teppo Jutsu site.

You will be very pleased with Tony.  He is a great guy and builds some awesome toys!  My wife loves her 50AE Sledgehammer.  Runs like a top with zero problems.

Give me a call when you need it transfered.

Yeah, Derek is swamped right now ... word gets out that you do good work and next thing you know you have a back log .... he is the only local C3 and a lot of the LEO around here are starting to swarm in for goodies.  Just had an area dept. submit their Xmas Wish List (outfitting the SWAT team ...)  And indeed, while the one in the pic got good dB reduction, we have one sitting there that was being worked on and trying different internals, and not getting near as good reduction.  Have an idea tho that might work.  And it does work with the collapsible stock.  The MagPul tends to be the best tele stock for these big rounds, but this customer has reported no issue with his Vltor.

Collapsible stocks?  No problem.  I was at a shoot recently, and a young guy had a 458 SOCOM.  I offered to let him shoot it on my RR M16 lower, with Rock River 6 pos collapsible stock.  I am running an AAC buffer.  It worked great!  I think he ran 10 mags (~100 rounds) thru it full auto.  It definitely has more recoil than 7.62x39, that I usually shoot thru that lower.

It was a real blast.

Damn you all!!! You just had to start something like this. Well I can see where my money will be going I swear just when you get money in you find a nice new shiney toy that makes your mouth water. Damn nice rifles people. I think I will wait till RRA comes out with their 458 SOCOm uppers and build a nice little cannon off of it. Please keep all updates coming and as to what kind of goodies are available for these nice toys.

So when RRA starts selling the 458 SOCOM uppers. Can I send it you all and have you build a custom rifle off of it? Cause from what I have seen on the site you have some sick stuff going on. Also could some one give me the specs on the second photo here the one with the aimpoint and about how much it cost. It si such a bad ass rifle.

RRA has indicated that they would be interested in building (semi) custom variants as well
Can you send either Tromix or us a RRA for retrofit?  Sure, or we can build it from the ground up
Specs on that upper can be found on our website under NFA Items

So just out of curiosity how much would a semi custom cost. Say I provide most of the parts such as lower and other things that are needed. I just think that the one above is so freaking naty.

Give Tony or Marty a call and work that out.  They can do what you want but the price is between you guys.  This custom build I am working Tony on is going great and I hope it gets others involved in custom builds with the 458 SOCOM.  Price is more between the one with the checkbook and the one with the skills.

Range report from Tony

Back from the test.
One set of internals didn't do shit.  The other two were reasonable
considering we're trying to suppress full power .458 SOCOM loads.
Sounded about like a 12ga shooting target loads.  You can shoot it
without hearing protection, but it is still pretty loud with full power
ammo.  With SubSonic stuff, it was quite a bit quieter.

It cycled perfectly, even with a rather small (for the 458) gas port
hole.  I am going to port the barrel about 1.3" back from the muzzle and
let it vent off in the large suppressor chamber, before the bullet runs
through the baffles.  That should knock off a bit more noise and I have
one more change to make to the baffles themselves.

I will test it again shortly.

Damn carzy stuff man..I will have to wait a while before going through with a 458 SOCOM build. Money restraints and all. But would love to see that bad boy when it is all done and see some destruction footage. Is your's going to be full auto? I know wishful thinking and all.

well I picked up a full rifle build from Tony but I was planning on slapping it on my m16 lower once in a while but not often.  I will post pics of the engraving I will have done on the lower and the barrel when I get it all in.  Will be some time yet.  Still thinking of a name for it. I was thinking “Potato Gun of Death” or something like that.  Have a spud with flames curling off of it on the lower and flames sand blasted into the silencer.

You should have gotten one of those VA marked DPMS lowers in the VA section could of had some crazy stuff engraved on it. How about "Super Boom Stick of Death"

Something like that on the lower with some 458 socom markings and then "Potato Gun of Death" in a Ranger scoll.

We are going to need to get them both to the range one day.  Why are just Virginia boys suppressing this beast?   I would like to see more zombie killers on this thread.

I'll test fire the final version in the next couple of days.  If all works as planned, I will produce external screw-on versions as well, for the big bore rifles.

.458 win mag ?

That is a lot of power for a buffered autoloader. Surprised it holds up to the beating. I have fired the .458 mag and my shoulder only lasts about for about three shots.

Awesome gun though.
