I decided to give Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube a try

I've found it remains on the carrier rails better than Mobil 1 oil and it feels "slicker"

How's the smell? :D

You wouldn't want to replace your aftershave with it.

i would pass on it just due to smell. 5w30 works and is about $5 a quart with no odor.

I was running Mobil 1 0W-40, but I wanted a thicker consistency.

The Mobil 1 70/90 Gear Lube is just what I've been looking for.

Yeah?  90w gear oil is the same viscosity as 40w motor oil.

I'm using some leftover Amsoil Severe Gear lube on my guns right now as I ran out of SLIP 2000, and it has almost no smell. The viscosity does help it stay put better than motor oil.

I remember when gear oil had plenty of sulphur as part of the AW additive package.
It stunk but it did let you know via your nose you had an axle seal leakink.
