I was going to float my M4, but was wondering how the float tubes look as apposed to a rail system. Do the float tubes look just too gay to put on, or is it a decent alternative before I can afford to put on a Yankee Hill forearm?

The one and only use I'd have for a rail system is to add a vert grip. It is not vital in any way, but would be nice. I think that I may tube it and later on down the road add a Yankee Hill rail system.

Also remember that a standard aluminum free float tube gets HOT under any type of sustained or rapid fire...

Do the vented models actually make a difference? What forearm do you guys recomend for a guy on a budget?

if you don't like the look of the straight tube
you could get a railed free floating tube

In my experience the vented ones do nothing...  they still get very hot.

What do you want to float your M4 for?  What kind of shooting/ what range do you shoot at?

The best budget thing is to leave the standard handguards.

Just for added accuracy, that is all. I would love to get a rail so I could add a vert grip, but not vital.

It's not going to add enough for anyone to notice, stick with standard HGs

You can easily add a forward grip without a railed forearm... In my experience the rails that bolt on the bottom of standard handguards are quite sturdy.  Or I have a Knight's Armament 2-piece system on my favorite M4gery.

+1 that most people, even when scoped and rested, see marginal at best accuracy improvement out of free floating.

Now with that said, my 20" varmint setup is free floated, but that is a rifle built for benchrest type accuracy.

On a carbine...  well if you want to spend money improving accuracy, you are probably better off improving the trigger, or practicing.

Desert_Heat,

Does this float tube look "gay" to you?  I had to go with the rubber overmold tube made by Hogue because like everyone said above, they get hot, and add the extreme heat a suppressor generates to the mix and it would get mighty toasty without it.  I can do mag dumps without gloves with this model tube.
