I am new to the 308 AR world and am looking for opinions on the dpms upper I have posted in the following link. I have had ar-15s for years and I know with the ar-15 platform that dpms may not be considered a top tier supplier( even though I have built one that ran perfect). I have normally stuck with lmt, DD, noveske, and similar but I recently got a good deal on a complete dpms 308 lower and am looking at uppers to put on it. This sale price seems pretty cheap and I just wanted to get you folks opinion. How are dpms in the 308 variety? I know some guns need tinkering, and I am fine with that. What are your thoughts on this upper. Decent? Turd? Buy it? Run like hell from it?

Thanks in advance for you guys help.

I forgot to mention that this will most likely just be a range toy for punching holes in paper. May see occasional use to shoot a deer...

I have a couple dpms 308's and am currently having a custom LR243 built by d9 firearms in Kansas city. my standard 16 in sportical (most base model) will shoot clover leaves at 100yrds.. my brother 308s will also (also dpms). your heavy barrel your looking at should perform even better..

I've got a lr-308 sportical, and it's pretty damned fun.  If you ever want to use swap from a FF tube to a FF rail, don't get the 'high' upper, get the standard height - right now DPMS is the only company making the high rails, while if you get a standard height than you can use any .308 rail that will thread on (DD, midwest industries, troy, etc).

Also, not sure if it's just because the sportical is quite a bit lighter, but with the plastic 6-pos adjustable stock and factory config, it kicked like a damn mule.  An FSC30 compensator fixed that damned quick, though.

nothing wrong with the DPMS guns, you should expect any factory rifle from them to not just run, but to run very well. i'v owned many DPMS AR's and they have all been 100% with all ammo, and all have been MOA or less (average of .75moa).
looks like a nice upper. 18inch is a good length for a .308AR, makes for a handy accurate gun!

okay I have a a sportical 308, and if that "kicks like a mule" you need to go out and get some real guns! no AR kicks like a mule! a 300 weatherby magnum kicks! the dpms are great guns. don't let anyone get you worried, if it is what you think you want, than you'll love it when you get it..

There's even a 10% discount you can use right now as well.  That makes this upper even crazier

Care to share what that discount code would be? :)

I have the whole DPMS gun with that upper.  I ordered it with the JP trigger and cryo treated the barrel.  I love it!!!  I have never had a problem with the gun running.  I did have a problem with the cartridges loading but that was due to reloader error.  This is the first auto I have loaded for so it took me a little time to iron the length out.  I shoot from 100-600 yds regularly.  I just put a PRS stock on it as I got the collapsable stock cause it looked cool. Mistake.  I can shoot playing cards at 350 yds with it regularly with that stock.  I am very eager to see what the new stock does.

I tried it to see if it worked with this upper and it did, but I didn't go ahead with the purchase, still have a bad taste in my mouth because of a bad barrel they made (MidwayUSA fixed it for me when DPMS said they wouldn't, but I don't think thats the reseller's fault, they didn't make a bad barrel).

Wow wish i would of known about that discount code, wonder if they will offer after sale?

Pulled the trigger on this when it first went on sale and just got it today.

looks like it was fired more then once (well at least the bolt has alot of brass on it).
but its a great deal so not too worried, and it was free shipping.

got to assemble my lower and get stock still before i can go fire it.

Mine actually came in looking just like the picture, even though the description says its the tall rail and smooth side.
