I found 2 spotting scopes for sale in the latest Sportsman Guide catalog. While I don't have a lot of money to spend right now on one, I don't want to buy junk that won't last, etc.

What are your thoughts on these two:

1) Winchester® 12-50 x 50 mm Spotting Scope Kit

product id is LX2P-64669

2) JC Optics 20-60x60mm Spotting scope

Product id is LX2P-61892

All listed at www.sportsmansguide.com

I don't have any experience with these, but I got a Leupold WindRiver, it's only $199 and is of very good quality. I then bought a camera tripod for it, the bench tripod is kind of useless unless you're prone or shooting from a bench. I bought a cheap Bushnell spotting scope before, the image was yellowish and blurry at long distances, the WindRiver has none of these shortcomings. For $199 from SWFA it's a bargain. If you buy a cheap one you'll invariably upgrade to a better one later one, so don't waste your money, when it comes to optics you almost always get what you pay for

One of the best spotting scopes for the money and just as good as higher priced ones is the Pro-Optic with the 45 degree eyepiece.....I bought 4 before I finally found one that you can actually see a target clearly at 200 yards......this one only costs $109 and is better than the Winchester 15-45x I had bought for $200........a lot better.......look at scopes at www.adorama.com.........

I agree that you get what you pay for.

The Winchester Spotting scopes I seen at the local sporting goods store were the green ones with the tripod and case. These are made in china. There were 4 left IIRC, and the first 3 I looked at had mechanical problems, and I was the first one to open the boxes!!! I didn't bother with the final one.

save your money and get a quality scope.
