Hello,
I am JD, i purchased a stripped lower from my local gun dealer, and today j&T distributing shipped out my expedition car 16" kit to me. This will be the first build I have ever done and my first AR-15. Can someone please give me any tips, or tricks for getting my baby together. My only main question is what tools do i need? I can follow the details here at www.ar15.com for assembly just wondering if I need special tools. I also had jt test fire the kit is there anything else I need to have attention to.
Thanks
JD

Welcome aboard

Roll pin punches are helpful but aren't absolutely necessary.  Just take your time and follow the instructions.  ARs tend to go together like Legos

Do you have an AR now or are you building your 1st one?  I had one when I did my first build.  I liked having a working model to fall back on if needed (it wasn't).

I'm sure you'll be fine.  Is the part about the cotter pin detent install trick shown?  It works great.  So does the working inside of a clear plastic bag trick.  Sometimes I like to keep a strong magnet nearby to hold parts and also capture them as I free them up if disassembling something.  Also, heavy tape works well if you're worried about scratching the finish.  Just tape it up and then proceed.

Good Luck, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Yep just follow that guide,it even recommends what tools you might want to usae, nothing special. In fact, when I built mine I just used some needle-nose vicegrips,a crescent wrench, some hemostats(to hold the pins) a real big flat head srewdriver(it was already in my office) for a hammer, and some tape.

spend the money, get a good, quality AR armory wrench (DPMS, Bushy, etc)

as to installing the castle nut, i'd just spend the $6 and get the stock wrench; h/w, you can use a punch and hammer/mallet to tighten it down (cresent wrench wont work too well, but a set of vice grips might, just dont clamp too hard down, lest you crush something)

got my j&t kit on friday, but they only sent me the complete upper, they are overniting the lower parts, and stock assembly, they were at least nice about them only shipping me half of the kit. The upper looks great J&T did a good job, however I will post range results after she gets fired, this coming friday.
Thanks guys

I had a good experience building a J&T kit.  Like others have said, just follow the posted directions on this board.

i just put my 1st lower together a few months ago
never owned a AR before
the kit took about 45 mins to go together
next time it might take 15 minutes
if you have any mechanical ability's it wont be a problem
everything makes sense as its going together

good luck

Having the proper tools for ANY job makes the project flow...AND, it actually can be fun!!!
Seriously, I live by the words, buy the best tools you can afford - buy cheap, get cheap!

When you're deal being with a weapon, or a car, life and death can often be traced to a sloppy build or repair.

DONT SKIMP ON THE TOOLS!!!! YOUR LIFE MAY DEPEND ON IT!

Yep,I would stick with usgi mags,I saw this video where this dude had some poly mags(not sure of manufacturer)and inserted one with the bolt open. Every time he would hit the bottom of the mag a bullet would pop out!

Not a Plug
I get c sports magazines with the magpul anti tilts. I buy them from Midwest industries. It is very convenient for me to order on the phone then pick them up on the way home from work.

0 malfuntions and they all drop free

GUYS ONLY QUESTION I HAVE IS WHEN I PUT IN THE DISCONNECTOR SPRING ONE END IS BIGGER THAN THE OTHER, WHERE DOES WHICH END GO?? THE BIG END GOES TOWARD THE TRIGGER ASSEMBLY OR THE DISCONNECTOR?
THANKS
JD!!!!

[#29]

JD,
The big end goes in the trigger depression, it should hold itself in there that way.
If you have any break in blues there is a very good Troubleshooting forum here also.
Many people experience a couple of malfunctions until everything is broken in. Keeping everything wet with a good light lube and using good ammo will help break in.
good luck,
leroy
p.s. your weapon looks great.
