I finally have a rifle that is different from any other configuration I've ever seen before!

1966 Colt XM16E1 upper with Knights M5 RAS and Knights VFG.

What do you think?

Abomination or masterpiece?

It's a Vietnam era retro M16 upper, not an A4 clone.

Yes, you're missing the A1 upper, stock & pistol grip. Not the current config'd A4 carried by our Marines.

Errr, I dunno bout that. Congrats on building something... Unique.

Its actually something I never would have thought to do with an A1 upper but it looks like it would handle ok like that ...I bet it would make the retro guys

I think it's great.  I've always liked the A1 stock, grip, and barrel.  Adding the rail allows for better sling mounting positions, a light, VFG, etc.
Throw a compact ACOG on the carry handle and I think you'd have a superb do it all rifle that would probably be ligher and better handling than most M4's around here.

Now I know what not to do to my A2 I just got, but if it makes you happy.( i under stand its a A1 upper)
Everyone will make fun of the fact I want a colt 4x20 scope on my carry handle.

I prefer my rifles to not have a VFG and my carbines to have it.  But if you like it then that is cool.

It sure is different that is for sure.
I prefer the more traditional look.

Take that off your Colt. Put it on anything else and you'll be ok. Though I like, it you shouldn't take the wire hubcaps off your vintage Cadillac and put on 19'' rims with spinners. That's my drift.

I like it.  A1 sights are good, LW profile 20" barrel for velocity and handiness.  What's not to like?  I think an A1 is the best of the 20"ers, IMHO.  I have an A2 and my brother has a fulton legacy and I drool over his.  It feels a lot lighter and the recoil isn't any more and it's just cool.  I could dig a faster twist, but then again, I don't think it's completely necessary.  I don't like the triangle handguards though and you've overcome that.  So, you done good.

Looks like something the IDF would use.

Thing works - and you've done no permanent damage.

It's definitely some mix of parts you'd see in the Navy. I've seen M4 barrels on A1 upper on A1 lowers here.

Nothing wrong with it... I'm a big fan of the A1 upper. I just wish I could find a C8 Detachable Carry Handle. It's a Detachable Carry Handle with A1 sights. Hard as hell to find. If I could find that I build the same exact setup.

I liked mine, a little sharp on the edges, but an effective, unique option.

Interesting, but kinda

If you took the VFG off though, I think it would look a lot better.

Miami  I have a removable A1 carry handle from cncguns.com Here's a pic.

http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm335/LWCoff2008/DSC00017.jpg

As to the rifle above, dude if you love it more power to ya. You don't need our approval. I prefer the A1 triangular forearm on the A1 but have often thought an A2 forearm might be better just from an ergonomics viewpoint. I don't know. I'd have to play with it.

EDIT: yeah i shoulda read below miami's post before posting the above but i didn't and so here we are... oh well at least we got a pic now.
