I'm in the market for a Recce upper of some sort to go on my Noveske lower.  I was looking at 2 uppers in particular.  My question is should I go with the standard upper that uses the MUR receiver their normal FF rail system (SWS), or should I go with the upper that is built on the VLTOR VIS?  Pros and cons of both?   Any other upper you would get instead of the Noveske?

This has worked fine for me.

Kind of a minor detail, but I was wondering if the QD sling mounts on your rail limit rotation of the swivel at all?

I used a vltor vis 3ak rail for an spr build. Its a great rail system and billet upper. The only complaints I had was that I had to make shift blocks for it to fit into the vice I have. And that vltor recommends that you use their barrel nut wrench only once. The brownells upper bench block wont fit on the monolithic rail system b/c its too beefy for the blocks. But installing the barrel was a lot easier. Especially with the gas system. There is no aligning the gas tube with the barrel nut. After I torqued the barrel, I assembled my gas block and gas tube, then just slide it right on with no problems I ve been happy with my purchase. . I would look around for the vis uppers and try to find one at a decent price. I was drawn between the SWS Rail and Vltor VIs Rails just like you as well. I think either way you go you'll be happy. I called SWS because I had questions on how they pin the ff rail to the upper reciever and they told me that it wasn't necessary. That they have installed alot of the rails without pinning them and never had problems. But, if comparing the two I'm almost certain there is going to be more weight with the vlotr.  If your interested in a monolithic design www.rainierarms.com also offers Mega monolithic uppers in both rails and a free float tube design that takes rail attachments. They are a little cheaper than the VIS.  What kind of upper are you looking to put these rails on? Let me know if you have anymore questions about the vltor vis.

Seeing the above post I wanted to add that the vltor vis had no spots in the rail system for qd sling swivels.

Decided to go with the one that uses the SWS rail. Figured I couldn't go wrong either way, but it sounds like the SWS will save a little weight a be a little less bulky. I'll post pics once I get it set up. Link:

I have an 18" with the SWS rail and couldn't be happier.  The QD mounts are a nice addition and I have had no problems with them at all.

I considered it, but decided against it for a few reasons.  Main issue was the added weight, I am trying to keep the weight down on this build as much as possible.   The medium contour stainless barrel is a good bit heavier than the chrome-lined Noveske, which has more of a govt contour.  Also, I already have a Larue upper, though it is a 18" version.  I really want to like it, but unfortunately it is on the way back to Larue right now to be repaired (for the second time)

I ordered this exact upper from them this morning!

ETA: I have a Noveske's SPR with the VIS, and the VIS rails are somewhat bulky - but not much.  Still, this is why I went with the SWS rail - tad slimmer and a bit less weight.

I received my upper yesterday and it is NICE.  The fit and finish is flawless inside and out.  It fits nice and tight on my Noveske lower, no play whatsoever.  I really like the look and feel of the SWS rail, not too bulky and it looks like it's about as light as they can make it.  The QD attachments DO have rotation limiters if anyone is wondering, nice feature.  The overall package is still reasonably light, and balances fairly well.  I'm glad I didn't go with a stainless barrel on this build, as I think the extra 10 oz. of weight would have made it noticably front heavy.  I'll try and get a pic up in a bit, but I'm 100% satisfied so far.
