I posted a pic of my Bushy on a local car forum and got blasted for calling it an M4 Carbine

(its the Carbon 15 "model" 4 carbine) and after doing more research all I have come up with is M4 refers to the first variant of the carbine designed for SOCOM use. But I still do not see why calling mine an M4 is wrong....maybe M4gery is the term I should have used?

M4 is a military designation as well as a Colt Trademark.

M4gery would work. CAR would work. AR15 carbine would work. But its not technically an M4.

what did this car forum aka "gun experts" say about your using M4 carbine?

In 1998 I built a carbine using a Colt 14.5" barrel w/ fixed Vortex on an M4 stamped upper along with a KAC RAS. Due to state regs, I had to go with a Colt semi-auto bolt carrier group.

The lower started out life as part of a Colt MH6601 Match HBAR Sporter. I also added a 1st gen Colt M4 buttstock assembly.

I called it an M4 Replica or M4gery, because it never had a select fire lower. It's like a non-gun person calling an AR15 and M16 just because they look similar.

How much fun do you think I have knowing what to call this thing

Realistically, an M4 is a Colt with a selector. Everything else is a carbine.

The IDF likes to cut down barrels too much... it ould be a 9" gun if they built it.

Any problems not running a weapon mounted light? I have done it both ways and I like a good SF rail mounted light.

Then you missed a lot of the A1 carbines that ended up with M4 barrels.

Might have a light one day. I can function with it along with a handheld. Not optimal, but sticking with the cheap and simple theme for the truck gun.

I've just seen a lot of short guns in IDF hands. A status symbol I believe. I have seen pics of M4s in Israeli hands, and they do use lightweight barrels a bit... they have a lot of variation.

I as looking into M500's the other day... it is cheaper to buy both a rail and a light than get an M500. Unbelievable.
