I don't hear much about it, so I was wondering.

On a military M16, is the auto switch a 2 rnd burst, 3 rnd burst or an empty the mag if you want to, option?

I think the M16A1 and A3 are safe-semi-full, where the M16A2 is safe-semi-burst(3 rnd).

Also, the M4 is 3-round burst, while the M4A1 is full-auto.

If you were issued an A2 in the military, what kind of trouble would you get into if you switched out FCG to S-E-F???

It probably wouldn't be pretty. I've never served in the military, but even I know that modifying your issued weapon in such a manner is against the regulations.

AR15, M16, M16A1 - safe/semi/full

M16A2 - safe/semi/burst (3 rnd), later versions safe/semi/full

M4 - safe/semi/burst

M4A1 - safe/semi/full

What exactly is a S-E-F Trigger Group?

If you're talking about changing out a burst FCG for a full auto FCG, you're talking about reduction in rank, forfieture of pay, and probably extra duty. It ain't YOUR rifle, you just get to take care of it.

I think the M16A4 is also 3rd burst.

Flattop 20" issued by the Marines, don't know if anyone else has them.

I think the majority of them are FN-manufactured.

The M16 I was issued in the AF (87-91) was born before I was. It was actually marked Colt AR-15 and had the full happy switch with no FA, triangle handguards and 3 prong FH. God I miss my happy switch

Note that export and non-military M16 versions differ widely. I have seen plenty of Safe-Semi-Auto M16A2s around.
