I'm putting this together after doing some research for one of my brothers, he asked me if I could build him a quality shooter for a grand.

I figured I would post this here, since a lot of new members ask what they should buy, and a $1000 budget seems pretty common.

Here is what I have so far, not including optics or mags:

$475 - BCM 16" carbine upper

$160 - BCM BCG

$24 - BCM charging handle

$30 - Cav Arms C4 handguards

$55 - Magpul rear sight

$90 - Spike's lower

$70 - LPK, either RRA or CMT

$75 - BCM M4 buttstock kit

Total cost not including sales tax or shipping: $979

Am I forgetting anything?

Nope, that would make a great quality rifle. You could also probably put together an LMT for a little over 1k by purchasing the upper and complete lower separately

that has it all covered to get started. Did you factor in the transfer fee? Also, if you're ordering from multiple vendors, shipping costs will add up. is it possible for you to get everything you need from Bravo? I know AIM has .01 shipping if that helps..

You think I can find a complete LMT Defender lower with standard M4 stock and trigger for less than $235?

I haven't really looked, I figured the Spike's deal was the best price I would find.

Yeah, I'm trying to get as much as possible from BCM so he doesn't have to pay multiple shipping charges.

The DROS fee is no big deal.

Looks like you have it covered. You might want to post and options section on the bottom. Maybe like ergo or hogue grip, $20, or magpul moe stock around $50. Also Bravo have some M4 hanguards for like $22 or $23. That saves you a little. Its not much but that might ofset the cost for an different grip. A2 grips just suck.

Looks like a smart way to spend 1K.

He can upgrade parts later as he sees fit, I'm just trying to get him into the game.

Yeah that will def get him in the game just throwing out options for someone who might be looking for a build around $1000. Your a good guy for helping him out. I wish someone would have helped me like that, and gotten me top notch parts.

Sounds like an awesome setup.  He'll need a sling, etc, but you got him in the right direction right off the bat.

Smart move. IMHO it's actually the upper that matters most. Most any decently made lower from a reputable company will be about equal. It's the upper that counts.

Nice setup, I would at least go with the Magpul MOE stuff(handguards, grip, stock maybe?).

Looks good to me. All these items are currently in stock at BCM, all he'd need to do is order the lower from Spikes and he's set!

My third post - so no slam intended.
From what I've read on this board the Colt 6920 seems to be the recommended or the best (in this price range). It can be had for 1,250.
https://policeguns.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=16_236&products_id=5635&osCsid=dqekrmlmnbkr3m5p0snj4gv4h1

Will the build be better than the Colt or on the same level?

I got my 6920 for 1175.00 a few weeks back.... search and they can be had cheaper than that :(  I would also be interested to know if I should have gone the BCM route...

Probably as good using BCM. That said, the 6920 is a great gun, resale value is greater. I have 3 colts and 2 BCMs, and love them both.

BCM barrels are every bit as good as Colt.

He can't buy a 6920 because his permanent residence is in CA.

I have to get him an off-list lower, Spike's are legal in CA.

Doesn't the upper include handguards already, or does he want the fat M4-style handguards?

building it yourself is more fun :)

Cant go wrong with Spikes lowers.

Legal Transfers has a group buy going in the old EE.  Stag 2H kit for $609.  Add a Spikes lower for $90....you are looking at $699.

The original wait was 12 weeks.....but to save $300 for ammo may be worth the wait.

No sir, you do not get any handguards for that price.

I'm actually going to give him the ones off my 6920, so that saves him a little cash.

ETA:   That's generous of you, but the 6920 handgaurds won't fit the BCM middy.  The Cavarms handguards will be fine.  I quickly scanned your post and ASSumed you were talking about the middy.

Have you considered ordering the BCM lower from one of the authorized distributers?  Probably slightly more expensive than what you're doing, but you get a nicer roll-mark (IMO) than the spider/chubaka.

I wouldn't do the MBUS if you're not going to run on optic. I'd go for some sort of fixed BUIS. That's just me personally...

Yep, I looked at those.

I can build a Spike's for over $100 less than that one.

I'm letting him borrow a CompM4 until he can buy one, I'm replacing one of mine with a Micro T-1.

That's the same gun I built except I used a fixed A1 stock, cut carry handle rear sight, and a spare pair of handguards. Came to $985.
