Hey there, Can't find the post but I printed out instructions on shortening the Socom Magblock to work like the KKF Magblock and I have LOST the copy. If you don't mind, could you post them again?

Irish,

First of all, I just typed all of the below text, when I read your question
completely through. I don't know how Kurt's block works. I just know
this worked on Oly setup....

I'm not sure I'm the guy your looking for, but I shortened one of my
blocks. I had it milled at work, but I have heard of a guy who did it
with a hack saw & a file, which I feel is a reasonably easy task.
I don't remember the dimensional numbers, but here is the jist.

Measure the difference between the top of the two slots on the back
of several Sten mags. Use this to obtain an average/mean dimension.
Cut the top of the block off, by this dimension. As a check, insert the
block into an open rec'r, prior to cutting and observe the relation
of the top of the block, to the top of the rec'r. Mine were both flush,
before & after cutting.

To add the mag catch slot... Rotate the AR mag release out of
position. Use the afore mentioned flush to top of rec'r relation to
locate the block in the magwell along with a Sten mag (mag is
just to help hold it), and mark the opening of the mag release
slot on the side of the block. Then you can use the edge of a
file to cut this slot. The vertical location is some what important
so I would file a little out until it will kind of catch, & verify with
a few mags. But keep in mind the mags can vary as well. Once
you feel that you have the right relation, finish cutting in the slot.

Another way to verify the correct slot location, would be use some
calipers set & locked to the mean dimension, to scribe the location
of the new slot by dragging them at the top & bottom of the original
slot. Use both methods to double check, I would.

I know the mag that came with my Oly had a socket head cap
screw mounted just above the slot. I have heard that this the way
Oly ships their's, but none of my other mags had this, & I've found
it to be un-necessary.

A friend of mine told years ago... "They're not magic, they're machines!"

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the help Johnny C. I also found the previous post as well so now I have a double input. Thanks again.

I bought a socom mag block and now think I might get a KKF one. Does the KKF block catch on the top hole on the mag instead of the bottom of the metal sleeve? I figure I'll just buy a KKF block and sell my socom. I can't stand the fact that the socom block catches on the top hole if you release the lever before you get the mag all the way out.

wm,
I cut mine down because of it catching the upper slot, too. But I also
like the look of it flush with the rec'r, as well.

Irish,
I can tell you how to make a block set that allows the use
of the ar mag release & Sten mags, if you're interested.
LMK.

I take it you are NOT talking about the Olympic setup?

Are you talking about the RRA / Colt setup?

Irish!
I was just checking IM when I realized that you were the one
I sent the Socom to. I'm sorry I didn't make the connection earlier.

LOL. Yeah I couldn't remember who it was that sent it and couldn't find your email. I did the changeover last night, it took about 45 min. and was a piece of cake. It looks great. I appreciate your marking it for me before you sent it!! It helped alot. Now if I can just get Olympic to get my upper to me soon. It came in yesterday and looked great except for one thing- It was A2 instead of a flattop like I ordered!! Oh well, they said it should be back in a few days.
I would love to see some plans on a mag hold open block for the Oly's. Shoot me an email or post it here.

OH FWIW anyone who has a Socom block might benefit by a small mod that I made to my block. The mags were somewhat tight in my Bushy lower and hard to get started into the magwell. I did a few things that seemed to help. First, I took a file and ramped the part of the magblock that first touchs the magazine. Then I took some steel wool and polished the face of the magblock that touchs the mag. Third, I made the mag catch (on the adapter, not on the original one) a little easier to seat into the slot on the back of the sten mags. I did this last part by Chamfering the edges of the mag catch to make it somewhat pointed and able to index in the slot more easily.

I don't know if the above made ANY sense but if I get my digital camera working I will post a pic or three.

Irish,
I must have marked it when I was first toying with this idea.
The other mag block set I came up with, does not actuate the
last round hold open. I does allow you to use the original
AR mag release. No paddle lever. I have no drawings, but
I could work up a photo/text spread, if desired.
