OK, this is my second AR build (first is an SBR with a EoTech) and I'm about to order the MR/T.  Planning on using this gun in the 25-250 yard distances, at the range and for coyote.  This is $740, plus mount.  Should I get something else, or is this a good way to go.

In that price range I would get an ACOG.

Danner-  this is the same situation I am in.......really want the loopy, but then again I tell myself $900+ with mount(laRue) and will the coyotes know any difference if I shoot em' looking through the MR/T or my current Weaver Grand Slam?  But damn, they just look so cool! I hate this BRD!

I can't talk you out of it. I went thru the same thing, but I did buy the 1.5-5 MR/T and love it. I only had the oppertunity to use it for about 300 rounds. I love it so far.

I won't talk you out of a good piece of glass. That being said, I'll try.

Can I have it? Please?

How's that

Seriously if it fits your needs, go for it. Every gun, and every optic are a comprimise. Pick the one you want and the one that works for you.

I plan on getting the same scope for a precision carbine I am building. ACOGs are nice but this model Leupold would be much more versatile.

what are you trying to imply? would what i said not make sense? he is using the scope and not me so how would i know what will work for him? the best person to tell him if it is worth it is him.

oh, and the reason i think the elders are leaving is because the same question gets ask a million times a day by people who dont bother to search or look up the answers and expect the same thing to be repeated a million times.

Ok.

Pick up the VariX 3 1.5x5x20mm Illuminated for $589 (SWFA).  Then get a LaRue 30mm SPR mount for $200.  Total:  $789, ready to mount to your rifle.

The VariX3 comes with 3 reticle choices (circle dot, duplex, German post).  If the SPR reticle isn't a priority for you, why pay for it?  I'm digging the circle dot, but you may want the other reticle.

Circle dot is Part No. 54906.
Duplex is Part No. 54902.
German #4 is Part No. 54904.

The VariX3 has finger click adjustments in 1cm clicks (although the Leupold site says 1/4MOA).  Once zeroed, you won't be messing with the dials, and BDCs only work with specific rounds at specific velocities under specific environmental conditions.

Are you sure about that? I think the Vari-X III is a 1" tube. I needed a Larue 30mm SPR for my MR/T.

Also, shop around. I got my MT/T for $640 delivered.

Good luck.

Yes, I verified the specifications on the Leupold site.

I think the reason why this one is 30mm and 1 cm clicks (as opposed to traditional 1/4 MOA clicks) is that it is actually one of their European metric scopes, but rebadged as a Vari X 3 Illuminated.

Note:  the regular Vari X 3 1.5x5x20mm NON ILLUMINATED scope is a 1" tube.  It has no exterior difference from the Vari X 2 1x4x20mm, other than markings.  Yet, the quality of the glass between the VX2 and VX3, to me, justifies the greater cost in the VX3.

Zmeja and others, I've been following this trying to decide bewteen the MK4 and Vari3 models. The extra $200-$250 for the "cool factor" is hindering things. Although I do like the turrets and .5 x 1" adjustments of the MK4. IF the Vari 3 was indeed 1cm it would help me to decide.
I've almost decided on the same vari 3 1.5-5 illum model you did. Are you certain it's 1cm and not 1/4 per their website. I was just there and it clearly says 1/4" adjustments. I woiuld prefer 1cm as it's closer to 1/2". Do you think they are all 1cm or you just got lucky?
Which reticule did you get and are you happy with it ? Any other observations/comments?

Thanks in advance.  I hope I was polite in my questions as some from Ok think we're barbarians in Texas.

PS this is going on a  Armalite 223 HBAR, flat top .

The only downside to these types of scopes is when all is said and done you are going to add a pound or more to your rifle.

a TA01 is 10 oz w/o the flat top adapter so it too would be close to a lb.

I've had three different ACOGs, an Aimpoint and an EoTech.  I prefer my MK4 to all of them.  My best advice would be to find a dealer that carries them all and make your own comparison/decision.

Here is what I have done...

I ordered a Leupy 1.25-4x20 "European-30" model ($360) with the matte finish and the German reticle.  I am going to mount it with a single Midwest Industries Aimpoint mount ($120).  Yes, a single mount.  The 30mm tube is only about 9" long and I can attach it just behind the knobs, which will be dead-center on the scope.  The MI mount is about 1.5" long and built like a tank.  It will hold the Leupy centerline a touch above the iron sites centerline.  I think it will double as a carrying handle I should be able to post pictures tomorrow.

Here is the scope:

Okay dont get the Leupold 1.5-5.....I would suggest getting the 2.5-8x36 MR/T with M2 or M1 Knobs and Illum or Non in Mil Dot or TMR!

My  TA01 is 14 oz with the flattop adaptor.  Most of these 30 mm illuminated variable scopes start at 15-16 oz without any mounts.

the LaRue adds another 6 or so .

I'm  really not making a suggestion just pointing out one disadvantage of these scopes.

I love  the 1-4 Variables but most of them are boat anchors.

The price difference you are paying between the VX-III and MK4 is that you get the spr reticle and a 1/2 moa BDC.  That is a huge difference between a circle dot and twist off caps that cover a metric adjustmen turret.

Thinking about the weight question...

The Luepy 1.25-4x20 European 30 weighs in at 10.5 oz., and the MI mount is 4.3 oz., totalling 14.8 oz.  So, this has some heft.  BTW, this it's going on a Bushy Superlight A3 with skelton stock that weighs 6"-5.0 oz. unloaded.

That's not bad.  When you can get close to the weight of a TA01 with mount then I'd say that's pretty light. The only downside is that you don't have illumination and it's very hard to find an illuminated variable that is less than 15oz.

TR21 (11.4 oz) and Microdot (10 oz) are the only two that come to mind.

I just returned from a week of training at Gunsite in AZ with the 1.5x5 MR/T. I had put about 2K rounds through the carbine with it here in Puget Sound before the class since getting the scope in December. The experience reminded me how cloudy it is in Washington: the reticle illumination was easy to see even at the lowest levels here, and useless in the bright light of AZ. Having said that, I love the scope. I was just as fast indoors as with an Aimpoint or EOTECH, a bit slower within 15 yards outdoors, and at a great advantage at longer distances and during the night shoots. I compared it to a Schmitdt and Bender short dot: the optics seemed just as good but the illumination on the S&B worked even in bright sunlight. The instructor with the S&B never uses it below 2x, so the ability to get it to a 1.1 magnification compared to the 1.5 of the MR/T wasn't a factor for him either.  The MR/T is a great optic, and compared to the price of the somewhat better S&B I think it's a great bargain.

Lot's of good feedback on 1.5-5x MR/T!

I wonder how it would work when combined with a Dr. Optic for close range stuff? Has anyone tried this combo yet?

Also, what zero do you MR/T guys use?

I'm using a 50yd zero. I had it at 100yds but the instructors at Gunsite slapped my hands, and I guess it's good to have the same hold over as the Aimpoint/Eotech or iron sight setups close up.

You don't need to use another red dot with it for close up; it works just fine for CQB, especially indoors.

I have mine zeroed at 100, I use the elevation and windage quite often on the gopher towns.

If I pull my eye far back away from the scope I can just barely begin to see the front sight in the lower half, but with my eye in a normal shooting postion I don't see it at all.
