Better velocity, better ballistics.
#2) "Government" profile barrel
Lighter weight.
#3) "Target Match" rear sight
Better accuracy.
#4) A2 length buttstock
I find the A2 quite comfortable myself.
#5) The little finger ridge on the pistol grip
While not absolutely necessary, I don't mind it one bit.

I don't know, that may just be my outlook.

None of the features you list are useless.
Everything you list as useless falls to your personal opinion.

I like the M151 Mutt better than the HMMV , but I wouldn't call the other useless.

I don't see any purpose of this thread other than to start a war.

I also like my 20"
I have never used a Gov't barrel
Never used a arget Match rear sight
I love my A2 Buttstock
I also agree that that ridge is odd, but I do not mind.

I agree. Plus the ridges on the grip aid a consistent grip and consistency in fundamentals = accuracy.

Carry handle, especially the new flathop carry handle that anything other than an Asian hooker with really small and well lubed hands could use

Why would you care. You can't have them even if you wanted to...want a cookie?

By the way you listed just about every feature that I LIKE about the A2...(except #3, since when did A2s come with target match sights...unless you mean the addition of the elevation adjustment knob)

To each his own...I guess.

I'm not sure what you meant when you said "target match sights", but I personally prefer the hooded aperture.  I live in a very flat and sunny land, and the hood sometimes comes in very handy.

I agree on that part, but I just use three fingers in the very rare occurence of actually using the carry handle.

Why yes I've been designing weapons since I was a kid.

The features I listed were mostly foisted off on the Infantry by a clique of Target Shooters.

The 20" has proven to be overly long for actual need.

The Government profile barrel was a mutant compromise...the Target Shooters wanted an HBAR (ugh!), but the M-203 woudn't fit, so they left the outer part heavier and justified it by saying it was for the bayonet, last used in 1865.

The Target rear sight...has anyone fiddled with that in combat? Easy to accidently change your zero. Optics are the way to go, although the A1 sight worked very well.

The A2 buttstock is too long. Again another Target Shooter driven "improvement".

The pistol grip notch is just useless...I think it was added on to up the "new parts count" and justify the A2 to people who know nothing about guns.

I find the pistol grip annoying, the bump is just wrong for me.
I have a middy carbine, so I think that answers what works for me, as opposed
to the average infantry soldier's needs.

Proven by whom?

The Target rear sight...has anyone fiddled with that in combat? Easy to accidently change your zero. Optics are the way to go, although the A1 sight worked very well.

An addition of the elevation adjustment knob makes it a target sight?  And when was the last time you accidently changed the zero during combat?

The A2 buttstock is too long. Again another Target Shooter driven "improvement".

That varies by person.

A2 grip works fine for me.
