Happened to notice on trijicon's faq that the ta31 is designed for 20" barrels and the ta01 is for 16's which is what my colt 6920 has. I know there are advantages to the ta31 including BAC but would I be better off with a TA01 because of the barrel length of my weapon? Also does the TA01 require the use of batteries for illumination?

TA 31.

The difference in the BDC is negligible, and the Bindon Aiming Concept makes it the best all around choice.  No batteries required for either one.

Here's mine on a 6920 upper:

TA31 is the red “donut”.  TA31F is the red chevron and comes with the TA51 mount.
