I have a pinned/neutered RRA telestock on my AR, and want to swap out for a new 6 position.  Is the spring/buffer assembly the same between the fake and real ones?  If so, couldn't I just unscrew the castle nut, holding the retaining plate in place, and not have to screw with removing buffer retainer, detent spring, and other highly "loss-prone " parts??

You will need to swap out the whole thing.  The newer 'M4' styled telestocks use a rifle buffer and spring.  Even if you had the older CAR styled stock with a carbine buffer and spring, you need to change out the receiver extention.

Just work slowly and you should be fine.
