I would like to experiment with a 300 whisper
upper with a suppressor but from what I have
gathered, it would not be legal on a post ban
lower. Would this be OK on a pre ban lower?
I am curious as my only other option is a
bolt gun! Any input would be most appreciated.
Should I need to post this elsewhere please
inform.

Thanks

As long as you have a pre-ban lower and you have the NFA Tax stamp for the suppressor and the barrel is 16" barrel you should be OK someone correct me if I'm wrong

Doesn't matter. Either can only be put on a pre-ban. No post-bans need apply.

1)On the subject, how much to sound suppressors cost? 2)What "hassles" go along with the 200 tax stamp? Do you waive your right to privacy and let the ATF knock on your door whenever they want? Etc

Hokie: In general you get an ATF Form 1 (I think that is the correct form for a noise suppressor) from ATF site or nearest office. Fill it out, get the local police chief or sheriff to sign it, get finger printed and photographed, mail it to ATF along with $200, wait 4-6 months. Can't answer the question on cost of suppressor. Several hundred, I would think, plus the barrel work, if required.

The hassles are in obtaining the stamp. FBI background check, fingerprints, OK from local authorities ect. You do not give up 4th amendment rights for owning a sound supresser or machine gun. You do give up these rights if you become a licensed FFL or Class 3 dealer. More info here Quote from NFA FAQ As to one who is neither a FFL nor SOT, but only owns weapons regulated under the National Firearms Act, ATF may only compel you to show an agent upon request the registration paperwork, that is the Form 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or whatever else might have been used to register the weapon. See 26 U.S.C. sec. 5841(e). They do not have any right to compel you to produce the weapon. As always the Fourth amendment applies, and ATF may not enter your home or other place of storage of the NFA weapon, nor seize the weapon, without a warrant, or without falling under an exception the Supreme Court has created to the operation of the Fourth amendment, or without your consent.

Thanks for all of your input. Right now I am undecided whether to pursue a pre ban or wait on the AWB to expire. Thanks again for all the info.
