Does anybody make a gas block that fits inside the ID of the barrel nut?

nope the gas tube layed on top of the barrel itself would be too thick for the barrel nut to clear. which it has to be at least that tall since it will be holding the gas tube.

what are you trying to do? why not do it the proper way? whats so hard about removing the gas block?

Change is good.

I'm a big fan of "set it and forget it".

Once you got the gas block small enough so that the barrel nut could slide over it, what do you propose to do about the gas tube?
It's still going to be under the barrel nut when you get the barrel nut up close to the reciever.
Maybe you could just roll up the gas tube around your finger for a second while you slip the barrel nut on the threads.
Then you could just poke it into the front of the reciever and set it between a couple notches?
It's not like you would be able to turn the barrel nut with the gas tube in the way otherwise.
Have you ever pulled the handguards off your rifle?

Assume a FF tube with a flip-down front sight on the top rail.

Remove the upper from the lower. Remove the bolt, carrier and charge handle from the upper.

Remove the FF tube.

De-pin (or otherwise loosen) the gas tube at the gas block.

Move the gas tube 1 inch towards the chamber end of the barrel, freeing it from the gas block.

Pull the gas tube forward, and remove it.

Spin the barrel nut off.

Result - one completely disassembled upper.

Why is that so crazy?
