I know this is counter intuitive, but I need to limit the number of rounds in a magazine to 5. (AZ hunting laws) I'd prefer to simply dowel/plug a 10 or 20 rd straight body mag so that I've got plenty of surface area to grab for quick reloads.

Any suggestions?

I cut a wooden dowel for my 20's. Works fine. Cut it a little long, trim as needed.

Do you simply slip it down the middle of the spring?
