I'm looking for suggestions for day/night (or day/lowlight) optics for a 20" RRA varnmit or busmaster varnmit. Anything within 100 yards of my livestock barn ought to be dead, and I'd like to be able to reach out a fair bit further at night, when the troublemakers come out.  Obviously, my range will be limited as I become better with this firearm, but what reasonable range should I aspire to?

It seems the local 'yotes need a tune up every 6 months, and right now they are out of control.

I'm willing to drop some coin if needed, but not more than $2500 for the optics.  I've seen a few that do day/night.  Are they any good?  Or would I be better off with two scopes...  Is there a good mount setup that keeps zero when swapping?

Suggestions on magnification?  Would I be advised to go adjustable?

Thanks in advance,
m

Acog Compact 3X24

or

Acog 4X32

I use the 4x32 for coyote calling.

I am going to catch hell for this but I bought a Simmons Aetec with the lit recticle.
It was not that expensive but the glowing red cross hairs really helps an old guy kill hogs at night. It has been flawless and holds zero. It is on my RR varminter and I am tempted to get another and take the Leopold off of my Rem 700 .270.

Would the TA55 be too much?

I like 3X or 4X scopes for varmints like coyote. When I used to use a regular 3-7X40 Leupold, if I had it on anything above 4X made it too hard for me to get it quickly on the 'yote. I usually left it on 3X and brought it up to 4X or higher if I had time. I went with the fixed power Acog (TA31F) because it was a bit brighter and clearer and the lit red chevron was a big plus.

If you've used a 5X scope on what you want to do with success before, the TA55 is a fine instrument.

Why an ACOG?  Fixed power and very, very short eye relief.  No thanks.

I'd recommend a low to mid-powered variable scope w/ illuminated reticle.

IOR 1.1-4x26mm

Leupold MR/T 1.5-5x20mm

Burris 1-4x24mm

Meopta 1-4x22mm

Trijicon 1.25-4x24mm

Nightforce 1-4x24mm

US Optics 1-4x22mm

S&B 1.1-4x20mm

Regarding scope mounts, LaRue Tactical is the only way to go if you want a repeatable zero.

Sorry arteacher, I can't endorse that Simmons of yours!  Nothing personal, but HuckMeat has money to spend, why not spend it?

Regarding range, you should be able to gain proficiency out to 200+ yards in no time.
300 yards and beyond, you will begin to be limited by the low magnification of your optics and the small size of your target.  Especially if it's moving.

If you're interested, I can make some scope recommendations that have a bit higher end on the magnification range.
Of course these longer ranges will require some trigger discipline, cheek weld, and stable positioning on your part.

I also looked for an article over at snipershide.com about a guy who sat in the dark at his range, comparing optics at 100 meter targets.
I couldn't find the article, but long story short, it takes some high quality glass to see in very low light.
In his article he said his US Optics and S&B could do it no problem, with his Nightforce coming in a close third.
His Leupold Mark 4 was significantly worse, not being able to see the targets clearly.  I thought that was an interesting test.

Then of course if you really want to see in the dark, post your questions in the Night Vison forum.

Thanks for all the great replies!  I'm going to have to start getting some looks through these and keep on doing my research...  Right now I hide in the bushes with a 12 guage and run out and beat them with it when they get close.... Not quite, but they are "confident" enough right now that a 12 guage isn't out of the question...  meaning I need to be tuning things up around here a little more often.
