I am currently starting to participate in a number of competition with my AR and notice that it is kind of hard to shoot prone with the regular 30 round magazines in the prone position.  Since I can only do single round loading for these competitions anyway, I was thinking of getting a 5- or 10-round shortie.  Anyone have a suggestion as to what is a good choice and why?

20 rounders work great for shooting prone or from the bench, I prefer pmags.

Thanks guys!  I too am leaning towards the Bob SLED since it does help guide the round into the chamber.  The question I still have relates to the choice between a 10-, or 20- round version.  Do people like the 20-round because it is easier to hold when shooting off hand?

I have been using a regular 30-round mag off hand as I found that if I palm the bottom of the mag and put my elbow on my hip, it seems to support the gun in a good position for off hand shooting.   Would be interested in what others have found.

I like 20 rounders for the reason I already said, they are easier to shoot from the bench and prone.

Another vote for the pmags.

Definitely 20rnd PMags, unless you can find old Colt 20 rounders.

In Service Rifle Competition 20 rounds mags rule.

If you are shooting in "Service Rifle division" the rules require that a 20 or 30 round mag be inserted. They modified the rule to allow less capacity, provided the exterior dimensions remain the same. This was done to be legal in mag capacity restricted states.

I always prefer the twenty round mags. I rarely ever shoot a 30 rounder unless I go to a combat rifle match.

You can get in trouble with the rules by using a 20 or 30 round magazine if you're shooting in "match rifle class". The magazine cannot be used as a support in offhand if you are competing with a spacegun. In match rifle you need even shorter magazines, I can't recall the exact measurement below the line of the bore, but a 20 rounder is too long.

Hi Captains1911 – sorry I missed your comment, too tunnel visioned on the 20 round comments – my bad!

Looks like 20-round pmag is the winner, probably best combined with a Schuster single shot magazine follower as pointed out by MadnessReigns – thanks!

My only question now relates to boaderpatrol’s comments – don’t know the descriptor “spacegun” –  I am a newbie, can you please elaborate?

I shoot prone just fine with a 30rd mag.

I can do it too as I had to today, but unfortunately I was involved in a rear end collision a while back which lead to some damage to the vertebrates in my neck.  The damage makes it hard for me to arch my neck back and so with the 30 round mag, I have to lift the rifle higher to clear the mag, in this position, my neck has to arch back quite a bit and it is not pleasant.  It’s what happens when you get old and some joker does not know how to drive!

Your arms must be taller than most people.
20 rd or less for something other than 'Service Rifle'.  I'm still searching.   The "ban period" 20 rd. Colt mags.  Work equally well if you remove the block or leave them as is

Lancer's are a good alternative to pmags if you want an even smaller mag

remember as others have said if this is service rifle competiiton the rule is the mag or loading device must have the same outside profile as a gi mag- so no mag/device shorter than what a 20 round gi mag would be. also they do not allow a 20 rounder with curved body

These 5/9 round mags might work well for your intended task

Thanks!

In looking at this some more, it seems like the main thing is to keep away from the 30 round mags since if you have the rifle sitting level i.e. in a prone position, they extend almost two inches further down than the grip and stock which is what forces me to have to lift the whole rifle up to clear the mag.  I have also been told to not rest the gun on the mag when shooting, so it has to be even higher.  However, I am not sure that there is any additional advantage to going shorter than a twenty round magazine which if I am correct will raise the rifle to about the same level as the grip?

Here is a composite of a MagPul 20 rounder sitting on a 30 rounder.  I have sized the two the same width so that the difference in length is visible.  The two composite mags is then placed on top of the 30 round mag on my gun and sized so that the two 30 rounder is the same.  As far as I can see, the bottom of the 20 round mag is significantly shorter than the grip which tells me that this is short enough?  This I think is the reason why the 20 round magazine is optimal?

Use a 20 round mag and the SLED. I have one set up like that and it's great.

Yes, the 20 round MagPul with the SLED seems like the best solution - thanks!

Midway has those followers on backorder. Adco (which was linked from the manufacturer's website) has them for $4 versus $16 at Midway.

usgi 20s' are nice and short.
this month's swat shows how a magpul 20 and the magpul loop work perfectly.

I use preban usgi's 20's and magpuls since I'm in ny.

20 round pmags... they are cheap and work 100%.  its shorter than the pistol grip so i dont think ya gotta go any shorter than that.

I would also recommend you get some 20rd'ers. No point spending just as much for a 5 or 10 rounder unless you have to by law.

The original Colt 20rd'ers with the aluminum followers are the best. NHMTG are very close second and much easier to find. I've also been perfectly happy with my 20rd PMags as well.
