As I have said before my late father worked at Cadillac Gage and when he passed I found lots of Stoner 63A stuff he had. I was shooting some of the Stoner 63A loose ammo head stamped R. A. 6 5 and man is this stuff hot! At 100 yards it hits a full 4 inches higher than M193 out of my Colt 6601. I think it is 55gr fmj as I remember my dad saying so. I thought the loose rounds might have been loose because they were loaded hotter but pulling a round from one of the linked drums or 100 linked round plastic battle packs produced the same results. All in all I only shot 10 rounds of the old stuff as I want to keep it but man it still has a lot of recoil and muzzle flash. Trapfan

Tag.  This sounds interesting.  I've never heard of different ammo for the Stoners.  What were the specs?  How much higher pressure is it than standard 5.56?

I do not know what the specs are on this stuff. It is .223 Remington but it just seems "hot" when shot. Now that I think about it my dad shot some out of his Remington model 600 .223 Remington carbine so it does chamber in a .223 chamber. This ammo also shot high out of my Bushmaster M4A3 14.5in barreled carbine. This ammo also has a bigger "fireball" at the muzzle. I might take a couple rounds to my sportsmens club and let one of the reloading gurus see what they can come up with.    Trapfan

I am pretty sure that the ammunition designed for the Stoner used 70 gr FMJ bullets. Troy or Brouhaha can probably confirm this, but I am pretty sure this is correct info.

Stoners were tested with a range of ammuntion from 68-77grains. I am unaware of a 70 grain bullet, only the 77grn fully metal jacket. It would seem that this is 55grn M193 spec ammo, which would feel/sound hot if you are used to shooting .223 Wolf. 1/8 NVM Stoners were later than 1965.

I will have someone pull a bullet and see what grain bullet was used. I have never shot Wolf brand ammo but have read it is mild. I have shot a lot of M193, Q3131, Remington 55gr soft points, Winchester 64gr Power Point, and Black Hills 55gr fmj ammo and the Mil. spec. stuff to me "seemed" hotter. I did not know the Stoner 63A ammo was as heavy as 77 grains. If that stuff is that heavy my dad thought it was 55gr or he would have never shot it out of his Remington model 600 with I think what was a 1/12 twist. All the Stoner ammo I found has been in 150 round drums, 100 round plastic battle packs, or loose but packed in .50 cal ammo cans. For ammo that is 41 years old it is smoking to the stuff I have pulled the trigger on.........Trapfan.

I have no clue what you have, but according to a book called "The Teams", the stoner did use a 77 fmj grain projectile. At least that was one of the rounds used for it. Also, any 5.56 load is going to be hotter than a .223 load.  And yes, people have shot 5.56 loads in bolt guns. It's probably tight in that chamber but people have done it before.  I personally haven't though.  FWIW.

77 gr FMJ (head stamp: NWM 67) and 68 gr FMJ (head stamp: IVI 69) loadings were made for the Stoner 63A. Fired from an M16A2:

77 gr FMJ: vel = 2874 f/s, pen = 19.2”, neck = 5.1”, bullet fragmented like M193

68 gr FMJ: vel = 3014 f/s, pen = 14.6”, neck = 2.8”, bullet flattened but did not fx
