Hello,

I was looking through the DPMS catalog, and I see that they make steel upper receiver (for 308, but I don't see why it wouldn't work for 223), and a stainless steel lower receiver

Is there any advantage to steel/stainless steel for building an AR-15 that would be used for benchrest type shooting or varmint shooting (in other words, not a lot of carrying around)?  Are there any clear disadvantages?

Thanks

I am no AR expert, but it seems it would add a lot of unnecessary weight to me.  The anodized aluminum is more resistant to corrosion than the stainless.  I just don't see any practical upside for an AR-15 in SS.
