Hello All, what is a good rule of thuimb on spare parts? Is it worth having a complete BCG? If not what do you recomend? Advice please.
Thanks Mike

I have never heard of a bolt carrier failing except in a KB, but it might be worth it to have a spare bolt, cam pin, firing pin, and firing pin retaining pin if you run it hard or just shoot alot.At that point maybe it would be easier to just buy a new BCG, but be careful they tend to grow into an entire new rifle

This thread has some good information - What parts break in a carbine course.

I have a spare bolt (complete), as well as several other small parts handy in case something breaks.

Like the other poster said, once you collect so many parts, it morphs into another rifle.

I find it easiest to just have a spare BCG rather than all parts minus the carrier. Plus it'll be a simpler swap if you do have an issue.

My spare BCG turned into my gf's new gun

My spare parts grow into more rifles that need more spare parts.

BCM is always my first choice.  Then PKs.  Also, Bushmaster makes a pretty nice 'complete spare parts kit' for around $45.

The best spare parts to have is a whole nother rifle.

Any spare part that includes the words "pin," "detent" or "spring" is a good spare part to have.

ETA:  And I look for spare parts at Bravo, PK Firearms and Brownells.

+1 Me too.

To wixbullitt:

For just a minimum spares parts kit I bring my bolt assembly, extractor, extractor spring kit, gas rings, firing pin, firing pin retaining pin, CH, and a complete spring set.

If you want more than that next would be a complete spare BCG, complete LPK with spare grip.

The best way is really a spare back up AR and all the above noted spares.
