I thought I'd post some pics of a couple different Hornady 75 grain loads.
I just got in the Practice ammo last week and it was different than I expected. I was expecting FMJ but the rounds are open-tipped. The casings also seem to be made of aluminum. Kathy wasn't full of info on product specs prior to my ordering. She did state that this was loaded as a practice round for the 5.56 loading, however, it is marked .223 and the yardage drops between the 80265 and Practice loads are closer than the 5.56 and Practice rounds. I apologize for the poor pic quality, I'm lucky I was able to operate the "ON" button properly.       Thanks for looking, Scott |

I just ordered some 5.56 TAP and got a case of the practice ammo at the same time. I wasn't too sure what to make of the cases. It's hard to beat the price though.
that's funny, I just noticed that the 5.56 stuff I got is stamped 'hornady' not 'frontier' |

On 03-03 I went out shooting and among the Wolf and BH MK 262 Mod 1 Seconds, decided to fire 5 extra TAP 5.56 rounds that I had. My performance with the BH was not what I expected, 4-5 inch groups at 100 yards so I wanted to try the TAP and had a few extra that screwed up my round count math.
It was sunny, around 40 degrees F, and I believe there was a very slight breeze. Weapon: Stock 6920 save CMT M16 carrier Sights: Iron Distance: 100 yards The carbine was fired from the bench with a shooting bag as a rest. 4-position stock was set in the Below is the 5 round group of the TAP.  I'm sorry, I tried to rotate this a 1/4 turn but VillagePhotos gave me an error message when I did.  I'm obviously not the world's best or even moderately good shot but this group blew away my several attempts with the MK 262 Mod 1 Seconds. Thanks for looking, Scott |

80265 is .223 and you can buy it without being a LEO, 8126N is 5.56 and LEO only direct from Hornady |

FWIW, the practice ammo is also LEO only, direct from Hornady. It's not reloads, and it's steel cased, not aluminum.

I don't know much about the cases but that case looks like nickle plated to me not steel. I could be wrong though. |

That would be interesting, most premium American made defense ammo uses nickel plated cases or brass.  Maybe because it's "cheap range" ammo ?? The only common steel cased ammo I'm aware of is eastern European stuff like Wolf . |

You don't have to assume. The 8126N DOES have a higher MV than the 80265 by around 150fps.

I'd say your observation that it's steel because it's "cheap range" ammo is correct. The only question that keeps floating around in my head is: If they load this to perform as a practice round for either of the "premium" TAP rounds (most likely the 80265 based on the numbers) and it contains the same projectile, why not just use this as your practice and primary duty round? It probably not only made of cheaper compnents but also has larger variances in case weight/volume and powder charges. This would mean its less accurate.

It's more like a 200fps difference in a 20" weapon (at least in my A2). Just figure the 5.56mm adds about 75yaards worth of fragmentation range to the .223 round.

How does the Practice ammo shoot? Meaning, how accurate and is the point of impact different. I currently have some of the 5.56 TAP and I just purchased 500 rounds of the HSM version of the 75 Grain TAP but their reloads are not that much cheaper. ($300 for 1000 new rounds and $246 for reloads.). If the Hornady practice rounds are pretty accurate, I'll switch over to Hornady on everything.

I used ~100 rounds this morning just to get sighted in and to plink a little. I didn't shoot for groups, but it struck me as more accurate than my usual AE223 or Q3131, and I didn't have any problems with it.
