Read the top of my post real careful,

These are Pre Big "D" pics

IF you ever want to loose something fast, faster than a boating
accident in a deep lake then the Big "D" is the answer

Ah. Bring vittles to my house then. We can share my one "blank" mag.

Sorry about the Big D disaster, dpmmn.  But man, that's an impressive collection, especially when I imagine the hardware they went with.

I bet it could still get a little dangerous to go snooping around in your neighborhood.

A meager collection compared to some in here, but its a start!

Kinda hard to tell where the mags stop and the rug starts.

Not a "meager" collection by any standards - that's suitable enough to outfit anywhere from 1 to even 5-6 AR's, with spares to boot!  Nice PMags...good chunk of change you got in 'em!

I'll post some next week once everything has arrived.

What's the best size ammo can to efficiently store AK-47 mags in?

I have some fat 50's coming for my AR mag purchase but need to find something for AK mags too.

You can store 10 AK 30 round mags in a regular .50 can with no problems at all

What about larger cans (I have 100 coming)

Don't know about AK mags in a 20mm ammo can...but I know what AR mags in a 20mm ammo can can do...

Loaded 20mm ammo can will fit ninety (90) USGI 30rd Aluminum AR mags:

  • 90 mags x 30 rds per mag = 2,700 rounds
  • 2700rds x 190gr/rd = 513000 grains = 73.3lbs for ammo only (M855, 62gr SS109, 5.56x45NATO)
  • 90 mags x 4oz/mag = 360 oz = 22.5 lbs for magazines only (USGI 30rd Aluminum; std baseplates)
  • 20MM Ammo Can - Approx. 21 lbs

Total Weight = 73.3 + 22.5 + 21 = 116.8 lbs

55-56 30 Round AK-47 mags fit in a 20mm can.

Won't happen for at least two years. The house is on our side for now and the way Dems are imploding, I don't see it changing any time soon. John Boehner for the win.

In addition to having lots of mags, I figure some mag whores also have some interesting or weird pieces in their ever growing collections. Here's one of mine, a "customized" 30-Round Pmag, cut down to hold 10-Rounds. It works very well, but has to be made from one of the older Pmags with the thicker magazine body ribs so the floorplate has something to slide onto. The conversion required altering the follower and spring as well.

the pmag has the most potential for the mini14 conversion. but its still sketchy at best. I had to do a bunch of trimming. the pmag is slightly wider then the mini's mag well. so I had to file a few thousandths off the whole width of the mag. I had to notch the back rib of the mag for the mini's mag catch. I had to grind down in front of and behind the feed lips (this is the big one since it severely weakens the feed lips not having the web at the rear). I had to drill a hole for the front mag retention pin. and last but not least I had to narrow the front 3/4 inch of the mag by quite a bit. I also filed down the follower because the action squeezes the top of the mag.

all in all I think I ruined a PMag. I don't regret it one bit. I might try it on another, also looking into the possibility of using a lancer L5awm because it has metal in the front of the mag where the mag retention pin is.

during the day I am a engineering tech at a prototype shop that works with sheet metal, plastic and billet. I think I can come up with something that will work.  if it will be practical is a whole other discussion.

I must say some of you guys have an impressive amount of magazines and a lot of money tied up in them. I hate to think how much money you have tied up in just ammo alone. I just have a few questions. Why so many? Some of you guys would need a 3/4 ton truck to remove all your mags with ammo in them to your safe haven if you had one. But what happens when you don't have transportation? You can only carry so many because of their weight. A .50 cal ammo can with just 860 rds in it is quite heavy and I believe it would take a pretty big and strong man to be able to carry more than one or two cans of ammo and mags along with their kit very far.  If you had to make a run for it I would assume you would have to leave some items if not most behind. I guess my biggest question would be how mags and ammo do you really need to be well stocked and capable of defending yourself and family?

I think for most of us it comes down to our own experiences with the AWB, the fact that The 2nd Amendment is constantly infringed every decade, that the hi-cap mag ban issue won't die with govt idiots who have no rationale behind their explanations, the whole Y2K craziness, and govt ineptness after Katrina, and on and on.

Amassing huge piles of ammo, mags, AR's, and other provisions is for many their only way of preserving their survival should SHTF.  The main reasons for me are many - too long to explain here and some won't make sense to anybody.  But just to give you an idea, 2 key directives for me - (1) if SHTF on a huge regional scale like a mega-Katrina to the whole Gulf Coast, not one family of 4, or 2-3 families will survive SHTF.  It will take a small community, a well armed & defended community.  It's about division of labor, duties, defense, resources, provisions, and ability - the basis for societal interactions.  My "arsenal" isn't for me alone.  It's for my 12 brothers & sisters & in-laws & closest family friends AND their immediate families.  Conversely... (2) while I don't believe a really bad SHTF will ever happen in my lifetime, I will damn well guarantee that my sons will inherit everything that The 2nd Amendment originally entitles them to.  No govt and no individual can take that right from them or confiscate what I have waiting for them.  I am confident that the gun rights landscape 20 years from now will be very different and in some ways that in itself could be a SHTF.  (FYI - my apologies to the OP/MOD - the above paragraph belongs more to the Survival Forum versus here.  Hence we might be walking a fine line when explaining why we're mag whores.)

As for how many mags and ammo, that is entirely up to you.  My own logic above dictates how many for me.  You set a number and see what you can afford.  Just never let it become an obsession but just set a goal and a plan.  No plan is perfect, but at least you got one to start with.  My plans have undergone revision many times, and the goals shift every year.  But the 2 core directives mentioned above provide core guidance.

I appreciate your response Warlord31 and I agree with you 100 percent, with the exception of seeing SHTF in your lifetime. I have been buying mags and ammo every chance I get. I guess I just don't know when enough is enough. I do know that I have more than I can carry if I had to leave my home on foot. Anyway I like my P-mags because for me they are reliable and work flawlessly in my AR-15 and I have never had an issue with any of them.  I just wish they made them for my Ruger Mini14GB. Well I am not a mag whore by any shape of the imagination like some here but I will continue to buy mags and ammo as long as I can keep the wife from jerking on my chain. lol

WarLord said it more eloquently than I ever could, so I'll keep it simple. I stockpile ammo, mags, spare parts, and firearms for two reasons:

1) As a hedge against future gov foolishness
2) As a hedge against market factors or production issues impacting availability

Contrary to popular belief, none of the die-hard whores that I associate with stockpile this stuff because of some twisted Mad Max fantasy. I'm fully aware that if my rural cul-de-sac becomes the white trash version of Thunderdome, the chances are good that I am going to die. I harbor no illusions about killing the invading zombie horde from my rooftop-or taking to the road to hand deliver a King James Bible to Alcatraz island.

When president Obama was elected ammo got scarce, and some places that had it were charging confiscatory prices-remember the $1100 cases of M855 at CTD? While all of this was happening myself and my friends were doing just fine-because I've been buying ammo cheap and stacking it deep for over twenty years. The federal AWB taught me to do the same thing with mags, lowers, spare parts etc. There is a certain portion of my household budget every month that goes toward firearms expenditures, and that will probably never change.

Ironically, now that my daughter is getting really big into shooting the amount of rimfire and 223 I go through every month has gone up drastically. I don't ever want to tell my little girl that we don't have any ammo

Here's what it's all about: My "little angel"() rocking her Sig 522:

Some rimfire ammo that won't fit into the ammo lockers (I did it for the children!):

What good is a mountain if ammo if your guns are broken? Spare part are paramount:

So you see, being a mag whore is just the tip of the iceberg for most of us. If you visited WarLord's house, for example, you would undoubtedly see the same theme play out that I just outlined.

Mags are just a very small portion of the overall package

ETA: Guess my post wasn't so simple...

I appreciate your input CJAN_NH. And I agree with you ideals. I hope I have not given you the impression that I am a youngster just starting on my ammo and mags along with accessories as it could not be further from the truth. After 25 years as a state trooper, 12 years military with 2 years in Vietnam I understand where our country is today and I DON'T LIKE IT. I know where you are coming from being a so called Mag Whore its just that I have not reached the point where I would be considered a mag whore to, not because I could not do it, its just that I am not sure if having hundreds and hundreds of magazines is logical for me personally and I don't condemn anyone that does, in fact I envy the fact that you have so many. I spend so much on ammo, mags etc but recently I spend more on food storage, because I feel my defense supplys are adequate for defending my wife and I at least for the time being. I  do have one question for you. I have noticed some photos of mags that are loaded. I have always be under the impression that leaving a mag loaded and put into storage for an extended period would weaken the springs. I have always stored my mags unloaded. Whats your opinion on that??

Looks great.

Question:  Why is the top round in some of your mags on the right and some on the left?

Obvious Answer:  They have a different number of rounds in them?

Is there not 800 rounds there?

Just curious.

Damn you girls are snarky. Some are only loaded partly for testing, which went 100% with all mags yesterday morning, and it's a glamor shot taken part way through for my bitches on the mag whore thread anyway. They all got a try in my SR556, and some got a spin in my brother's POF. Ran 6 with 40rds and the rest with 5 just to check that they would feed. Now show us yours. This is a picture thread, after all.

Some people could be like me and simply have an addiction to buying shit like mags and ammo.

I feel 10 magazines fully loaded is an acceptable "SHTF" loadout, as in...thats all I plan on taking with me if its a bug out right now sorta thing.

But I grew up in St. Petersburg Florida. Can you say race riots? Hurricanes? I would want, and I do have, hundreds of 30rd mags loaded. No, I never plan on needing 3000 rounds to defend myself from the hoards of looters and rioters. But if its a really bad situation, how long will it be before I can get more ammo? Think about it, after Katrina...if you lived in LA how long would it have been before UPS started delivering to your house again?

More importantly, its about friends. I have many, many friends with AR rifles, and sadly only one (who is like Burt from Tremors) probably keeps more than a box of ammo in their house.

If you can get your mindset out of TEOTWAWKI, and imagine rioters coming through our neighborhood its a very real situation where I wouldn't mind handing out 15 mags to everyone I knew that had an AR. In 2004 after being obliterated by the 3rd hurricane of the season we had no power for weeks. We all came together and had generator lines running across the streets, people were sharing freezer space and anywhere that had an AC wall unit. I wouldn't want to see my neighbors SOL with no ammo anymore than I would.
