I have owned many AR’s and a few S&W M&P’s to boot. My current AR22 setup is a dedicated Tactical Solutions AR22 Upper. It is a sold dedicated .22 LR platform and it performs, but this is about the M&P 15-22.

When I first took it out of the box, I was a bit surprised to find it was mostly polymer based. The upper, lower and even the 1913 rail were all polymer which makes it light (5.5lbs) and easy to handle for children and women. Aside from being mostly polymer, all of the controls function just like its big brother, so if you want training time without spending a crap load on ammo, this is as real as it gets. The stock and grip are interchangeable with common AR accessories which is also a plus. My favorite feature is the standard threaded barrel in 1/2×28, so it is suppressor ready. For these shots, it is wearing the Vortex Strikefire and Magpul AFG2, both available from Rainier Arms.

Cost is certainly a huge selling factor as most gun stores have it for under $450 and lower if you shop hard.

In summary, the 15-22 is certainly a winner for Smith & Wesson. Compared to its’ competitors, it’s a more realistic training rifle for the AR platform. Reliability has been good with most ammo so far and new shooters will love this rifle. Now for the porn…

I bought one of these rifles and am totally happy with it. I'm in the process of dressing it up and was wanting to add a rear sling swivel in the same area. Can you please tell us which one you used and how you mounted it? I was thinking of using a Tango Down clamp on, but they're nearly $80 bucks with shipping. Thanks in advance.

Only the moe version comes with the intergrated sling attachment. There are some write ups on drilling a hole and installing an aftermarket but I'm not sure if I would want to do that. Clamp on sounds like the best solution.

The M&P 15-22 MAGPUL edition comes like that. But you can ad this pretty easy and cheap:

The fire control parts are standard AR-15, too. The selector is slightly different, but there is a BAD-ASS kit available for it.

I drilled a hole and added a cup.   It was relatively easy (and cheap), but then I had an extra flush cup on hand.

Great little rifles!
