Can you do head shots? If so, the ammo is irrelevant.
Chest/shoulder shots with HP ammo will leave 2 hindquarter that are edible, but that's about it. Larry |

I was thinking about American Eagle FMJ boat tails. Would they do the same? I was hoping they would go straight through with minimal damage.

Like someone else said, the hind quarters might have been usable. Isn't the backstrap on a coney the good part? |

all FMJ and anything above 55grns will just go right through the rabbit without fragmenting. Some HP go right through too. The absolute best factory laod (that I've found) for rabbits is winchester 55grn PSP, It literaly turns 'em inside out. I've used this load to kill many many rabbits.
Try shoting 'em through the neck, their heads pop off like cork from a wine bottle. |

Check your state laws too. In a lot of states its illegal to hunt with FMJ bullets.

In Utah rabbits are not considered a game animal, therefore, no bag limit and no restrictions on ammo or calibre type. I don't know about other states though

I always heard those rounds penetrated much deeper BEFORE fragmenting so you wouldn't think they would cause a bunny to explode. Are you sure you weren't shooting tannerite bunnies? |

I have shot jack rabbits with 55g fmj PMP and Wolf ammo. The Wolf ammo is definately less destructive than the PMP. However, if I wanted to eat what was left of a rabbit after shooting it, I wouldn't use a .223, it's hard to gather up the pieces sometimes.

I have had good luck with a 30-06 150fmj handloaded to about 1400fps for this type of work. Make sure you do not go too light.

OK. You guys have forced me to start looking into going prairie dog hunting relatively soon. If I get it put together, I'll bring along a large assortment of .223 rounds and video the shoot.
I'm also dying to try out a 110gr Vmax on the little suckers. POP! |

I do know in Oregon you cann't use FMJ's to hunt game animals but I didn't see Wabbits listed in the hunting rules. And unless it's a .22 it can only be a five round mag. Oh ya and no full auto either. You have to use a blender if you want liquid deer.

Now that I think of it Barrett makes some really nice rabbit guns. If ya got them lined up right you could definitely get more than one with one shot.
