The other day I was playing around with different sling mounting options.  I have a 2-point sling mounted to a reciever plate on the rear & near the rear of my railed forend.  I really liked the way it worked but in looking at it the rifle hung so the sock was out from my body a littl & the muzzle was pointed more at my foot.  I have an ambi sling mount on the rear & tried attaching the rear of the sling to the outboard mounting point (I shoot lefty so I attached it to the point on the left side of the rifle, if you're right handed you would attach the rear of the sling to the right side of the rifle & keep the front attached to the left side).  This pulled the butt in closer to my body & kept the muzzle pointed away from my foot.

Just thought someone else might want to try it out.

Put the sling mount back on the left side of the weapon and when you want to let it hang, hang it so that the ejection port is turned towards your body.  Tucks it in like you just discovered and leaves more slack when you bring it to your shoulder.

It also provides a more smooth motion when you transition to your sidearm.

ETA, I just noticed that you are lefty, so obviously you need to reverse the above.

If I reverse what you said for a lefty (turning it so the ejection port faces out) that would put the grip pointing to the right which would be pretty tough to get ahold of.

Or did I miss something, or explain what I was doing poorly?

Yes, it puts the hand grip facing the 'wrong' way to grab the grip with your firing hand.  But it puts the fore end or fore grip in exactly the right position to grab it with your support hand.  Your rifle should be hanging towards the off side so that it doesn't block access to the sidearm and the support hand is closer to the center of gravity it is more suited to lifting the weapon towards a firing position than the firing hand.  Both of those things make the support hand better suited to grabbing the rifle and raising it into position.  Use just the support hand to get it into something close a low ready position, grabbing the grip with the firing hand as it comes up and it'll settle right into place.

Try it a few times and you'll find that it is very smooth both raising it to the shoulder and when 'dropping' it to transition to a side arm.  And smooth is fast.

Ejection port out is what I learned at PFT.

I'll give that a try, thanks for the heads-up.
