I had heard a rumor so I e-mailed Sig. They told me they plan on having it out in mid 2008. Everything else they are keeping quiet and guarded about. I have tried to get some/any info but they aint giving.

     Oh great!  I just bought a 556 not even 6 months ago.  Now I have to start saving my pennies for another gun!  I wonder what mags they'll be using in this one?

How do you like your 556?

I have been struggling w/a .308 purchase for months now.
I would like an HK417 but nothing short of magic, you aint getting one for now. Plus, when they come out, let's just say, they will be pricey!!!!
Plus, H&K has ignored us civies for a while now. Not sure I want to give them any money.
So, I'm waiting to see what Sig does in the .308 arena.
I like the LWRC .308 coming also but some of these companies have a nice product, good quality, but lack production capabilities. I don't want to orders something and then wait in excess of 12 months.

Don't want to start the direct impingement vs. piston but I have decided on piston. Just a preference thing.

     I will admit, I like the 556 so far.  I qualify that with so far, because I have only gotten to the range with it once.  I got it LATE in the fall, and i'm not much of a winter shooter.  It worked 100% for about 75-100 rounds.  Accuracy was on par with my M4 at 100 yards.  The down side is that the charging handle can get in the way with a traditional scope mounted.  I had decided to try something other then a dot scope with my 556 and went with a 1.5-4X scope instead.  I also had to read the reassembly instructions 5 or 6 times before I "got it" with the gas system.  I think that will get easier with familiarity.  The part that won't get easier is needing a screwdriver to separate the upper and lower.  Push pin AR's are a blessing compared to that!  I plan to shoot it more as soon as I make the trek to the range.  I don't forsee any further issues.

I fondled a sig 556 at the store the other day. Liked the feel of the rifle, but I am saving for a DPMS LR308 first. Then maybe I will get a sig 556 or their 308. Hopefully before all the tree hugging liberals vote in a Lib Dem and they start taking all the fun guns away.

     I've already got a DPMS in .308 and it is a nice rifle.  I love blasting away with mine.  I've yet to have a malfunction with it.  

     I am certainly impressed enough with the quality of the 556 that I would get one in .308 when or if it came out.

unfortunately we have a lot to worry about. None of the candidates are worth a shit, and the democrat prospects want to turn the US into a police state. Anybody hear what kind of price will be on the SIG 308. The 556 that I looked at was 1400+.

No joke, the last time this happened 94, you couldn't find rifle primers, mags or hi-cap pistol mags anywhere and when you did they were $60-$70 for a $20 mag.
I hope everything is grandfathered just like last time.

This may or may not be relevant to this thread but you may want to consider why you are buying the .308 (what is its role) before you buy the Sig.

Gas piston systems mounted to the barrel can be detrimental to accuracy...or at least sqeezing the last bit of accuracy out of a given barrel.  May not matter to you given what you want the rifle for...but it is an issue.

The way I figure it, until someone makes a multi-barrelled, multi-caliber, multi-functioning, low recoil, cleans itself, doesn't miss from 10 to 1500 yards, gets a beer out of the fridge and shows porn in the optics, I will just have to purchase one of everything till the wife says stop.h
I'm lazy and a gatling gun's too heavy with too many barrels to clean.
