I want to buy a 20" upper in pre-ban config, but am hesitant about the AWB really going away.  I suppose I could just wait and see, but if it does die, then there will be huge back orders on anything preban.  Well, I've waited 10 years, maybe I should wait as little longer.  What do you guys think?

100% correct.

_This_ ban is done.

The bastards will try for another one, of course.  If the socialists can get Kerry into the White House and a majority of pink scum in Congress come November, they'll try for another one as soon as they're sworn in next year.

In which case we can expect an even worse ban, and all bets are off as to whether they'll "grandfather" anything or leave any so-called "loopholes" for us to use.  And we can be damn sure there'll be no expiration date next time around, nor in any other gun bans they attempt.

But _this_ ban is deader than that asshole Senator Simon who voted for it---I know there are other dead asshole Senators (Wellstone comes to mind) who voted for it---but  Simon caused me no end of glee when he became worm fodder.

Let's bury the ban on 14 September.  And God willing, let's see freedom-thief  and ex-Senator Howard Metzenbaum---another of the swine who voted for the ban in '94 and who is still cheerleading for a renewal---join the Ban, Simon and Wellstone down in Hell real damn soon.

I'm wondering about all the pessimism about "the next ban".

With all the heart warming, pro-gun legislation being passed all over the county - many states adopting and/or relaxing their CC laws - I'm seeing a different point of view - ESPECIALLY if there is another major terrorist attack on United States soil.  I've got a feeling that the anti-gun sentiment has been greatly reduced in this country and I just don't see another ban coming anytime soon.  Let's hope I'm right on this.

Bottom line, buy whatever you want, as you can make it ban compliant if this one gets extended.

geocon,
as long as you dont put the upper on the lower and push the pins in, you are not breaking the law.

If by some freakish stroke of bad karma, congress DID renew the ban in the few days they have left in session after the recess(VERY unlikely at this point) all you would have to do is grind the ears of the bayo lug, pin on a fake flash hider, thread protector or brake and voila it is a postban.

Come on, live a little.

I just don't think it's over.  I think eventually the tide will shift in Congress, the White House, and the Supreme Court, and when it does we'll be screwed worse than we were for the last 10 years.

I also happen to think that the people we keep holding up as our allies are in fact not.  It honestly wouldn't surprise me in the slightest to see this congress and this president pass a new ban before his term is up if he is re-electected.  Call me a pessimist if you like.

At the end of the day all it really means to me is that I'm going to buy what I can while I can.  And I'm thinking long term.  Without going into details, I'm trying to make plans that would cover my heirs for a generation or two.

That's it.  I'm placing my order for one today.

P.S.  Attention ATF lurking skum!  I won't put it on until after 9/14.  And, if the ban doesn't end, I'll cut it in half and melt it down and turn it into an unusable piece of nothing.  I prominse

The clauses for having weapons in knockdown state with intent to assemble refer only to NFA items, not Semiautomatic assault weapons. Proving intent to assemble is easy if you have MG parts, not so easy with so-called assault weapon parts.  They are just spare parts that have not yet been modified for assembly into a legal postban configuration rifle.

I have my pre ban 'spare parts' ready to go.
What will happen to the stuff on the market , the post ban stuff...will it be sold cheaper?
Will it be reworked, what do you think?
Will I be able to buy a reasonable priced Beta C mag for my AR?

There are still states with bans of their own.  The current "postban" stuff could be sold there, and should get the same price it always has.  I have a feeling though at least at firs the prices will drop because of so many people looking to offload postban parts.  Watch the EE on 9/14 and see all the "postban barrel for sale" ads you see.

I will probably have my postban barrels threaded if nothing else.  I've been thinking of having them turned down to a lighter profile anyway.

From what I've seen they'll be about $250.

I gambled. Now I have everything I need but my completed RRA upper (in the mail by now, I hope) and my lower. The upper's paid for, and the lower's only $90 +tax at Ameetec.

I bought my stuff two years ago, as soon as I found out about the sunset thing.  The parts are sitting at a friend's house.
