Can anyone tell me the difference between a Colt 653/654 and the GUU-5/P?

Very nice video! I love to hear that thing talking!

653's and 654's have forward assist, while the GUU doesn't.

According to RBR, the 654 had no forward assist, so what you are saying is the GUU-5/P is essentially a 654, but with a 1-7 twist barrel.

*EDITED* to correct my info above.

I guess I just needed to look at RBR for my answer!

Still, these are probably my favorite carbines for light weight and "usefulness".

Not necessarily. The GUU-5/P can be found in all different configurations (upper/barrel/stock/lower/etc.). In the different GUU-5/P weapons I've seen, the only thing that is a constant is the slip ring. Have yet to see one with a delta ring, but I've only seen a small sample, so I'm sure they're out there somewhere.

Here is a fun little piece of Air Force small arms history… a very old CATM weapon. This one even had an old chrome Colt bolt and carrier. The GAU. – 5/A/A that Colt stamped at the factory has been Xed out and GUU5P has been stamped below (only one like this I've ever seen, the SN is: 909xxx).

Just found this online... looks to be an older (A1?) lower, A2 upper and M4 barrel ...slip ring?

Why X out the last digits?

Also, I'm pretty sure that "GUU-5/P" stands for "Gun Usually Using 5 Parts" - Upper, lower, barrel, stock, and hand-guards!
