sure it is possible.
you just have to raise your none shooting hand higher and the elbow of your shooting hand closer to your body. our GIs do it all the time, and that is how I remember doing it. |

Try using the mag as a unipod. I do it all the time, especially from prone on the ground. Some people may say this might change the way the gun feeds and I wont argue with them. But in a Bill Jeans class I took, he mentioned he has never once seen it cause a problem in all the classes he has ever instructed. I havent either but he has a lot more pull than me!!!

I've been using the mag as monopod technique for two years now and haven't seen a malfunction with it yet - even though in loose sand you end up feeding some sand into the mag.
The only concern I've ever had is that during firing the mag catch basically becomes a fulcrum as the rifle recoils. The mag stays in place due to contact with the ground but the rifle recoils backward, dragging the steel mag catch against the aluminium mag. It seems to me that this would eventually enlarge the mag catch hole and that might cause some feed issues; but I haven't seen it happen in practice yet despite using this pretty frequently. Of course now that the ban has sunsetted and you can get new mags for $12, it is even less of an issue than it was. |

I noticed a difference the first time i tried the monopod style with a Rangerplate on the bottom of the mag... helped from keeping the bottom of the mag all gunked up with sand/dirt etc.

Never seen it cause a problem, but use a 20rd. mag or raise your elbows as others have said. You could even use one of those damn 10rd. mags now that theres a flood of those out there. After all the only other thing they're good for would be a paperweight

I have to say that it may be akward at first, but I do it all the time. though in the begining i did have some double feeds in my M16 due to the mag contacting the ground or the sandbaghelmet

I have a BM carbine that is nearly a 100% functioning weapon. However, if I use the mag as a monopod I can sometimes tip the mag forward in the well and cause a round to jam nose first into the barrel extinsion/upper reciever. I have to wonder if this is not one reason for M4 feed ramps. I also have to wonder if a little tighter mag well would eliminate this. My mags don't rock quite as much front to back in my Colt and I have never had this malfunction with it.

Yes, I just started using the Ranger plates on some of my mags and I noticed the same thing. They really help that whole mag as monopod concept. I also like being able to manage different types of ammo by the color of the plate. As far as mag changes go, I haven't really seen any improvement due to the plate. |
