GRNC Alert 08-27-04:
Semi-Auto Ban Will “Moderates” Sell Out At Last Minute?

According to a recent report by CNS News, so-called “moderate” Republicans have become quite vocal in these waning days of the semi-auto “assault weapon” ban about their desire to renew this horrible law.

These include in the House: Mike Castle (R-Del.), Doug Bereuter (Neb.), Tom Davis (Va.), Michael Ferguson (N.J.), Nancy Johnson (Conn.), Peter King (NY.), Mark S. Kirk (Ill.), Jack Quinn (N.Y.), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (Fla.) and Christopher Shays (Conn.).

In the Senate: Lincoln Chafee (R.I.), Susan Collins (Maine), Mike DeWine (Ohio), Peter Fitzgerald (Ill.), Judd Gregg (N.H.), Richard Lugar (Ind.), Gordon Smith (Ore.), Olympia Snowe (Maine), George Voinovich (Ohio) and John Warner (Va.).

Rep. Castle has gone so far as to hold a press conference with Sarah Brady to urge for its renewal. Of course, as you probably know, President Bush has promised to sign this odious bill should it land on his desk. With victory being within our grasp, we can’t afford to allow them to forget who brought them to the dance. It’s time to remind them.

Republican leaders:

Some politicians and members of the Republican Party seem to think they will get the support of gun owners in November despite their actions; some are pushing for last minute re-enactment of the so-called "assault weapon" ban

Yet in a "Red State--Blue State" polarized political environment where so few votes are undecided, the GOP seems to have forgotten that its ability to turn out core supporters will quite probably decide the outcome of the November election. And alienating a key constituency in Second Amendment voters by selling them out at the last minute will undoubtedly suppress turnout among those who were central to defeating Al Gore in 2000.

Is that what you want, or do you think liberals will replace conservatives in supporting Republicans if the "assault weapon" ban is re-enacted?

President Bush has said he would sign a bill for the semi-auto ban if it made his desk. Perhaps that is just so much political posturing; but if such a bill is presented to the President and if he signs it, the result will be not only loss of Republican seats in Congress, but the election of President John Kerry.

For once, Congress can do the right thing by riding inertia and simply doing nothing: No risk, no recorded votes, nothing. I strongly urge you to do nothing: Let the so-called "assault weapon" ban fade into the oblivion it deserves.

Well thank god that even if all those house members switched sides, there still wouldn't be enough votes for it to pass through the house.

no, they wont.

because the party leadership knows that renewing the AWB will cost Bush the election, and many repubulcans in congress their jobs too.

the semi-republican shitheads from liberal areas can bitch just like the dems... but unless the leadership caves nothing will happen.... in 4 days

they will not, a lot of heads rolled after the first ban, do they really wanna risk part 2?

... An announcement of an AWB ban extension aired coincidental with the RNC next week would go over like a fart in church

... It would be the death knell for the Party

Even if they wanted to they are out of time. Besides, it would cost Bush the election.
