Uncle Sam shoots a LOT of M855/SS109 through 1/7 barrels without issue.

Technically for the long bullet tracers that are used with the M855, but ya.

1/9 was made for M855/SS109 and it was changed to 1/7 due to a tracer redesign because tracers that could get the specified burn distance were lnger than expected. Burn distance had to even be cut back to 800m.  Prototype M249s had 1/9 barrels specifically for what is now M855 ammo.

Bushmaster stated something along the lines of 1/9 stabilizing up to 75 gr bullets when used in 20" or longer barrels. 1/7 in a shorter barrel is good for using the heavier bullets.
